Just talked to my sister about Mom. She had been moved fromt he hospital to a nursing home for rehab for her hip surgery, but the nursing home administration DIDN"T TELL the aides that Mom was there due to a broken hip and surgery. ( I think they were to ignorent to read the CHART!) They just thought she was an old lady that had moved in. Consequently, they had her up WALKING and then yesterday afternoon they got her out of the bed to go to the bathroom. Instead of allowing her to get her left foot solidly on the floor so that she could pivot and brace herself with her hands the aide swung her around and she had to put her right leg down to keep from falling. Dad and my sister got a hospital bed and moved her home, but today the pain was so bad and the leg was drawn up and spasming so badly they had to call an ambulance and transport her back to the ER. She was on 2 Vicodin (she only weighs about 120 lbs) and said the pain level was a 10. They reXrayed the hip, and the tech and ER doc both thought there was another break in the hip below the first break. The radiologist wasn't sure, thinking it might just be the pins that were seen. She has to wait until Monday to see the surgeon and they will decide if more surgery is now needed. Prayer for Mom is surely needed, also for Dad and my two sisters as they try to decide what the best treatment is now. Anyone want to buy a nursing home cheap? You will have to get your own license. I don;t think they will keep theirs long. At least I hope not. Jerry

| Jerry, I cannot tell you how much I empathize with you right now. (we're dealing with this with Jim's Mom too) Deciding what is best for her now is something that will take a whole lot "out" of them and you. I wish so much that all of us weren't so far apart so we could give advice, hold each others hands through crisis after crisis and just be there for one another. My good thoughts for everyone are as strong as I can make them Jerry. Huge hugs and a prayer. For her..and you that have to deal with this. Linda

Oh Jerry that's horrible and brings back some ugly memories for me of when my friends mum (who was like a mum to me) was horribly neglected by a nursing home. Make sure they can't do it to anyone else. I hope your mum is okay, update when you can love Helen x

Hi Jerry, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother's ordeal. A caregiver being too lazy to read a chart is unforgivable. Once you have your Mom's care figured out, sue the hell out of them. Good luck. Prayers on the way. -Dennis-

At shift changes in a medical situation, the medical staff leaving always "gives report" to the oncoming staff. There is no good excuse for this happening. You are all in my prayers. This is the type of situation that creates guilt on the part of the family as they try to make decisions they shouldn't have to.

Nursing homes .... Had problems with my grandmother too. She fell and broke her hip, and was on the floor for over 7 hours crying .. and finally passed out from the pain before she was discovered. That nursing home now has new management, and people crawling up their asses monthly... thanks to my aunt. People were fired, rules were changed... protocol reviewed....and hopefully, it wont happen to anyone else's mother. Hugs for you and your family!! Now, go get em! edited to get my smilies in order

Jerry, I feel for you. I was so lucky with my grandmother, she was able to live on her until her death from a stroke at 87 (I had a caregiver that lived in my dad's house which was right next to hers). The hospital should be able to help you set up whatever services (including renting a hospital bed) she needs at home (homehealth is a godsend in most cases), all you have to do is talk to their counselor. If you can't make headway there, call the local Council on Aging and talk to them. Along with contacting an attorney, you might want to talk to the elder abuse hotline and the agency that licenses nursing homes (pm me if you need more detailed info and I'll put on my research hat and get the information for you). Thanks so much to you all. That is what is so great about this place. You all lend support for a lot more than just CH! My sister rented a hospital bed and Mom has been sent home. My two sisters are staying at the house with Dad and are tag teaming caring for Mom. Right now because of all of the spasming caused by the mistreatment they have her pretty sedated with the strongest dosage of Vicodin allowed along with a very heavy dose of Valium. At the moment she is sleeping, and they are to keep her in the bed for at least 24 hours, and are holding off on the therapy for a couple of days. They did determine tonight that there is NOT another fracture of the hip for which we are very grateful. Thanks again so much to all of you. You guys are loved much, and my family is very appreciative of your prayers and concern. Jerry

Your post as well as several others brought back horrible memories for me. My mom couldn't walk and thought she could. When she was at the hospital in June 2006 she had a "sitter" as well as an electric monitor to be sure she didn't get out of bed. Once she was moved to the nursing/rehab place none of this was included. I even asked for a bed monitor and was told they didn't have them. She fell out of bed and broke several bones in her face...... it was down hill from that point. My Dad hasn't really figured how to deal with the legal aspects but has written a letter to the hospital. My prayers go out to you and your family. Keep her at home as much as you can!! Charlotte
