I bought today a 500GB External Hard Drive With FA Porsche Design Roll Eyes Also came with High-Speed USB 2.0  Shocked

I paid $140.00 at Future Shop and I do not know too much about computers and thought I would ask you guys. We needed a bit more memory so we went this route.

Did not stay long in that store with just me and my credit card, nice place! Grin

500gb is a huge amount of memory, we paid £250 for 250gb last year.  I would say you have a bargin $ 140 = £70/80

We use the external drive for the photo programme and music.  This keeps them safe and frees up the computer hard drive for normal use

Don't you just love computers they open up the whole world

If RAM is what you needed, you went the wrong route.

If storage is what you need, then you're rockin' now.

Storage is what we need, thanks Brew.

Tanya, I have a 2GB card for my camera and it holds a lot, so 500 must be huge. I am ok with what I paid, I just do not know sometimes what I am buying. I am learning though! Grin

$149.00 for a 500 Gb external drive, isn't a bad price. Why do you need an external drive? Why not just add a 500 Gb internal drive to the computer and save $70.

Kewl Barry,
I LOVED Future shop when we had it down here...we haven't had one round her in like 10 years.

We just got an external 320bg for 99$ at Office Depot.  Ron plays around with video so that's what that one is for.  We carry around our music on our old dead compaq laptop's 20gb hard drive.  Turned it into a mobile external via usb case Smiley

I needed this extra memory for projects that I do. I did a project for someone and she proofed it said everything was good make her copies for her family.

I waited a week, did not here from her and I figured everything was good. To clear up space I had to delete the project to start a new one. She called me a week after Christmas and told me their was a mistake and now I have to redo the project from scratch because I deleted it out of the computer.

My question is can I leave the external memory turned on at all times and use this or should I just use this for storage.
The instructions did not tell me if this could be left on.

Any drive is going to last longer when it is off.  An external drive only needs to be turned on when you are using it.  My advice, for files that you want to be always available, you probably want to install a drive inside the computer.  For storing projects or archiving stuff, you probably want to use external drives since they can be put away for safekeeping.

Another thing, 500GB+ drives generate a lot of heat, so the less they are running the better.  Those external drive housings don't dissipate heat very well, so they fail more often than the same drive installed inside the computer.  Just something to think about.

Thanks fubar

I will take your advice and use this only for storage. I will keep it powered off when not in use.

Good advice, Fu.  Very timely.

I'll pass it on to EJ--they just installed an external hard drive on their business network for storage that holds a terabyte.  I expect that thing runs hotter than a cheap cigar.

Best,

Does sound nasty, don't it?

1000 gigabytes.  I have no idea what they're putting on there, and I know better than to ask.  They'd probably have to kill me.
