My daughter, now age 40, is one lovely person. A hospice nurse, a mother of two (had premie twins and lost one at 8 months old.) and is everyone's best friend. She's wise.....unlike me and many others.
She was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 17, but due to unusual circumstances could not have the surgery she needed to correct it. Her spinal curve at that time was 23 degrees.
About six months ago, she started to have severe spinal pain, went to the doc. and found her spinal curve to be 30 degrees. Surgery was the only option...cut from neck to tail bone, rods around the spine and ribs used for bone fusion.
She lost her job (and hospital insurance) at Hospice as she was out of work for six weeks. Her husband applied for her to be added to his policy.....which was approved last week. For six months I have watched her go from an erect, good postured person to a woman bent over with pain and pressure on the spine. She has had to fight docs for relief..she was thought to be a drug seeker. All they had to do was look at her x'rays.
She has had three opinions. The third today. In the past four months, she has gone from a 30 degree to a 50 degree curve of the spine. She has bursitis in the hip from pampering the leg that hurts.
She called me crying today........this professional, strong and private lady........and it broke my heart. My little girl is going through such physical and mental pain.
She realizes that her dream of continuing as a floor nurse is over...she has a bacholer of science in nursing...she raised two children alone, worked full time and acquired her degrees with honors.
Now her only alternative is reconstructive surgery.....from the neck to the tail bone......rods and bone fusion. A surgery of at least 8 hours.
I am scared shi.less! She has a couple of bad heart valves, no less. That she inherited from me.
Please send your vibes and prayers for my Judy. Her surgery will be scheduled very soon as she is in a great deal of pain and the curve is progressing at a rapid pace.

Your "little girl" seems to be a very strong and determined lady.
She may need some help and support from you and all of us along the way but in the end, I know she will be fine.
No need to worry, Donna. You taught her well and Judy will be okay.....we have her now.

edit to add: I can't say enough good things about the people of Hospice, that alone tells me how unselfish of a person she is. IMHO you are blessed to have a daughter like that, and it says alot about you too. Please let her know we are thinking of her, and we're praying for her comfort and well being.

Oh Donna, There is no greater emotional pain than seeing one's child hurt. Orthopedic surgery has come a very long way and I truly believe that she will be so much better afterwards.
You be there for her and we will be there for you through this. Don't underestimate your own strength in this.

This surgery may be the best thing that has happened to her. I pray that it is and that it relieves her of all pain and curvature problems forever. You both have a long road ahead of you but it will be worth it in the end. Like many have said, orthepedic surgery has come a long way. My daughter's swimteam buddy had surgery at 15 yrs old for scholiosis and grew 2 inches and was back in the pool competing the following year. It was a good 6 months of rehab and physical therapy and no school. The operation was probably less compicated than Judy's but it was so exciting to see her progress. She is now a junior in college majoring in nursing. Best of luck to you and Judy!! Prayers are coming your way.
