How to get rid of cough...?
« on: Jan 2nd, 2008, 5:37am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

For the past 10 days I've had this annoying cough.

After taking 2 different kinds of cough meds, couple flu meds, garlic treatment and drinking plenty of hot teas, I'm out of ideas.

How do you get rid of persistent cough?

Thanks in advance,
Sanna

What kind of cough? Dry or wet?
Against dry cought - not joking - an old Hungarian "folk-cure":
onion-tea. Boil an onion (with its red skin) in half liter of water for 15 mins. Cool it to 50 °C and sweeten with honey. A bit malodorous but works perfectly. Get well!

Be sure it's not something more. Maybe you need a trip to the doctor, may need an antibiotic? I love mucinex for coughs but am not sure it's in your country. The ingredient is guaifenesin and may be under another label. Feel better soon!

Thanks for the advices, guys! Smiley

Totka, my cough started out as wet one - I had a flu first - but now it's more a dry one. In fact, I'd get the wet cough, but this one has got me by surprise.

Charlotte, I believe that it's solely a cough following the flu - at least for the time being. I hear that plenty of people have had this cough for a month, jikes! I certainly do not like the sound of that one... BTW, I checked that I have tried a Finnish cough medicine with the same ingredient you mentioned. Thank you for that. Smiley

Andrew, I quit eating candy few years back, but if dark chocolate helps me get rid of this one, I'm going to get lots of it! Smiley And maybe bit for Timo as well - he adores dark chocolate! Smiley

Melissa, thanks for the Ricola bit. I haven't tried those yet and I'm pretty sure that I have seen some of them back in here. I'm going to get me a pack of them tomorrow. Smiley

BTW, has anyone tried honey? I read that it can help kids, but I have no idea if it could help me as well. Smiley

Hugs & PF days,
Sanna

If it's really annoying and it's keeping you up at night, try small, regular doses of codeine for no more than 3 days.

Sometimes a dry cough can become a bit of a habit.  Sounds strange, but EJ had a persistent dry cough for a time that was just that.

After ruling out anything else, her doctor had her use Flonase, along with non-prescription cough drops to interrupt the urge to cough.  Took a couple of weeks, but it finally went away altogether.

Hope you get rid of the pesky thing soon.

Best wishes,

George

Codeine doesn't cure a cough, it quiets it. It's the nature of narcotics - immobilizes the cilia in the lungs.

All it does is help you sleep 1) by making you a little drowsy, and 2) quieting the cough so you get bigger chunks of uninterrupted sleep.

Whatever is causing the cough is unaffected.

Edited to add: The study you provided is for over the counter cough preparations. Codeine can only be had by prescription.

Happy New Year Sanna!
Sorry to hear you're starting it with a cough.  Actually, honey can help soothe the throat, as can a bit of steam...a nice spot of chamoille tea or orange spice tea with a good sized dollop of honey can soothe the throat and the steam can help moisturize the mucus membranes.  It also tastes good and is comforting. Grin

My granpa's recipe for annoying cough:
suck 2 horehound rock candies a day, keep your mouth shut if the air is really dry, and fetch him his pipe.

Course my grandpa's remedies always included us keeping our mouths closed and fetching his pipe. Grin And I don't know if you can get horehound candy anymore-it tastes pretty vile except for the rock sugar coating.

Be better soon my friend,
kathy

Alcohol actually has the same type of effect on the cilia in the lung as narcotics do, just less effective. So, if you're not in cycle and you can tolerate it, grandma's old remedy of a shot of brandy or schnapps at bedtime might do the trick.

You can.  I see it once in awhile.  I suppose a person could get it off the internet.

I'm probably one of the few people who actually likes horehound candy.  Then again, I like Stilton cheese, and I've noticed that Red Bull ain't too bad, lately...

Alcohol is out of the question, I've been shadowing a bit, so I don't want to risk it, just in case.

Laxatives... Grin Actually, one annoying thing about this cough is that it's very unpredictable. I cannot tell when the next coughing bout arrives and how bad it will be.

In fact, yesterday just a sip of water was enough to trigger a bad cough... Roll Eyes Luckily, last night I didn't wake up coughing and today has been much, much better. I had some tea with honey last night, who knows if it did the trick... Smiley

I AM feeling better today, cough-wise, which is great. It's not over, oh no, but I have been coughing much less. Yahoo! Grin

Thank you all for your tips and advices. Now I know what horehound candy is among other things. Grin
