| If your looking for us to diagnose you, you are crazy....we are not doctors! Just tell your doc the symptoms and ask him if he thinks it may be cluster headches. Good luck!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

| The best information to bring to your doctor is a good description of what is happening, pain level, how often, how long, in other words a headache diary. http://www.ouch-us.org/downloads/headache_diary.pdf

Clearly, the first and best choice would be to ask your doc for a referral to a headache specialist. These conditions are just too complex for one person to learn about as quickly as your needs require. If that is simply not possible, I can send you two medical articles which you could print out and give to your doc. (They are in PDF format, so you need a reader, plus printer.) If you want them, send me your e-mail address to my e-mail (don't post here). Run your cursor over the wee icons below my name to the left and you will get my address.

Hi Pigeonhole, I totally agree with Bob. When anyone goes in to see a medical provider, it's usually because they're in pain, and patients don't always have the presence of mind in the office to report everything. The thoroughness of the doc is another crap shoot. Doctors see a gazillion patients every year complaining of (1) cold symptoms and (2) headaches and after a while they can get a little hardened or casual. At least that's been my experience. The Headache Diary solves this. Try to fill it out to the best of your memory to take with you, but also fill it out every day for a while. It can take several medical visits to sort things out (for me it took decades!). And, yeah, some of us can be a little testy. This curse can do that to you. Good luck tomorrow.

If your neuro is worth his or her salt, THEY should be the one who orders the MRI. To rule out anything more nefarious.

I don't know how it works on the other side of the pond, but over here, a family practitioner can and will, based on certain criteria, order an MRI. That's good practice because then the neuro will have a little more to go on in starting your care. You're working on that headache diary, right? Here, getting an appointment usually requires a referral, and sometimes there's a lag of a week or two before you hear back. These kinds of delays are excruciating for us in Clusterville. I have found that I have to phone the appropriate person and convey the urgency of the matter. One particular time I reported that I was "despondent" and that seemed to move mountains. Anything that smacks of a trend toward suicidal makes everyone jump. In the U.S., if someone commits suicide, there is a pretty thorough inquiry into whether there were red flags and whether those red flags were heeded. I'm not saying to falsify information. But tell them like it is. Post again to let us know how you're making out. And by the way, if you say "ain't," I hope the heck you also say "y'all."
