Beast is Back

Hello to all, well ive been pain free since oct 04, but 2 nights ago very early in the morning i had a horrible feeling that i was gonna have an attack, it started with that feeling that someone was in your head and poking the back of my eye with a needle, had to get up and within 5 mins i was holding my head and rubbing my temples aggresively, dancing with the devil, i was praying he hadnt come to visit me again because usually i get hit on the right side and with it the nostril would block up, the weird thing is that im still getting hit on the right side but my left nostril is the one thats blocking up, has anyone ever experienced this before? but my dreams were shattered when this morning at exactly 5. 40 i got hit again same deal, head banging on the right side, left nostril bunged up, this is a first for me, normaly i get hit once a day with mild phantoms after. Does anyone know why i had such a long remision? i tried to kid myself that the beast had gone for good as its been my longest pain free time (normaly one cycle a year for about 6-8 weeks) its a bugger that its back, i have never taken meds for it as i dive for a living and all those drugs would stop me working i am thinking about grabbing one of the o2 tanks that we have at the shop to keep by the bed, maybe this would help, would it be okay to use a normal scuba reg with it, or is that a bad thing to do? anyway im sure ive written nothing new and i just needed to vent to someone who understands as none of my freinds can really take it seriously the doctors ive seen always tell me i have a sinus infection, but i tell them how can i still dive then? no probs when im under water with my sinuses if they were infected surly i wouldnt be able to dive, so ive lost hope with doctors, specially cos im living in mexico and i have no faith in them, thanks for being here guys, more later... Dave

First, sorry the bastard came back. Secondly, are the tanks 100% O2 or simply compressed air? 100% O2 is what you need, but if you can somehow get that into a tank or 2 you may be ahead of the game. Demand regulators have been discussed, and you could try it, but I'd opt for a medical reg at 15 lpm at least with a non-rebreather mask if the demand reg and mask doesn't work. Someone else with more O2 knowlege will be along shortly. Welcome Home!

Hi Dave, I'm sorry the beast has returned to your life. There are lots of people who have luck with O2 here - me included! I add an energy drink to the mix and it usually keeps the beast at bay for a while. If the scuba tank is filled with 100% O2 then I would encourage you to give it a try. The demand valve on that rig will give you all the flow you need. Would Imitrex keep you from diving? If so, why? I can understand wanting to avoid meds that affect clarity of thought. Imitrex doesn't have that effect on my or anyone I know of. But I don't know anything about diving. -Dennis-

I can relate to believing the beast was gone. I had 2+ years of living with the belief it was all over. Life was good. I'm always pretty quick to forget the suffering, too. You have to! Anyhow, as someone who has given oxygen to 1,000s of people, a demand valve is fine but the source has to be oxygen. I have heard horror stories about oxygen that was not medical oxygen, but I have no way of knowing if they're true -- as a diver you know the dangers of using a tank of gas that is contaminated. Hopefully the oxygen is all you'll need to live sanely in the next few weeks . . . I haven't had good luck with doctors either . . .

Thanks for your feedback guys, We mix Nitrox at the dive center so i have a supply of medical grade O2 i will be breathing 100 per cent, i hope this works as i got hit 3 times since i last wrote, so there goes my 1 hit a day theory, last night i had a beer and within 10 mins i was rolling around on the floor banging my head so i'm guessing alcohol is a trigger for me too. Never used to think it was, anyone else have the opposite nostril blocked? the phantoms seem to hang around in the morning for a good couple of hours suckks so bad, as for drugs ive got no idea where to find imitrex, and its effects on the body, not many doctors here in my tourist town of Tulum, and they have never heard of cluster headaches, these are the doctors that always said i have a sinus infection, anyway again let me say thanks to those that replied, and i wish all of you pain free times, gonna be hanging round for a while, Dave

Never had the opposite sinus block but the way the beast morphs I'm not too suprised. I use a modified demand regulator which is very similar to a scuba regulator. I prefer it to the high flow as I like to take in a huge breath, and then hold it for 30-45 seconds, then completely exhale and repeat. It seems to work better for me that way so a demand regulator works better for conserving the 02. I used to rec dive, nothing as complex as mixing gases like you're doing so I'm not sure how any of our meds would interact with that. I can abort a headache in less then 10 inutes, often as fast as 6 minutes using the oxygen with the demand regulator. They tend to return within 20 minutes if I do only oxygen. Now I pop an oral cafergot, then start the 02. 02 beats it down, cafergot buys me up to 12 hours pain free time. Obviously run it by your doc to make sure it won't screw you up at 200 feet but it might be worth a shot. Good luck! Guiseppi
