How do you know a cycle is ended

Good evening to everyone this is my first time here my name is Tanya How soon can you be sure the beast has gone away. I first had Clusters at 17 and was diogonosed by my docter stright away, he gave me something to prevent them (I do not know what) they did not work. I just suffered on and off for a few years then they went away for about 15 years with only the odd attack of one or two at at time. Then I had an 11 week attack nearly two years ago but only late evenings and night attacks when I thought I would die, now they started again 4 weeks ago. This time I am getting 2 to 3 at night kip 7 to 9/10 and 1 to 3 day attacks that very from 4/5 to 7/8 depending with shadows that always seem to be with me, I never know what I will get and the pattern keeps changing. But I have gone over 24 hours with nothing but a light shadow on and off all day, can I go to bed with out fear?

Hi Tanya, 24 hours w/o a headache doesn't mean your cycle has ended. Everyone is different and I am chronic...but from what I've heard here, if you're getting hit say 4 or 5 times per day, day in and day out and then you've gone say, 3 weeks w/o a hit, you can pretty much be convinced that it's gone. For now. What had you tried before that didn't work? 70% of us swear by oxygen, Imitrex as an abortive and Verapamil and Lithium as a preventative.

Hi Linda I was hoping the answer would be yes, but as I type this my shadow is getting stronger. I have only used Imitrex tablets 100mg untill 4 days ago when I got the injections, these work super fast but I can only use two a day. my doctor talked about my going to a neurologist which I will push him on if they have not gone. I would like to try oxegen to see if it works for me and will be stocking up with red bull Monday morning

Tanya, you might as well forget about the tablets. They take so very long to even get into your system that it isn't worth it. Print this out: http://www.ouch-us.org/medications/oxygen/o2info.shtml and read it yourself so you will be well informed when you see the Neuro. Make certain when he gives you the script..that it is written for a regulator that goes to 15 lpm and that you get a non-rebreather mask. Try Melatonin so you can get some sleep at night. It has worked for a lot of people for the night-time hits and YES....stock up on the energy drinks with caffeine and Taurine in them. You said they started when you were 17, but I don't know how old you are now, so I'm not sure how experienced you are with these HA's or how much you've read here. I don't want to insult you by telling you things you already know. We're all here to help you in any way we can. This place here that you've found has a combined total of thousands of years experience with CH. We're also a FAMILY and you are now our newest member. Welcome to the house that pain built.

Thank you Linda They have not gone , I have had three bad ones since . I am now 45 but this is only my second cycle for 15 years or more. I thought they had gone for good. It scares me because every time I have a bad one I don't know how I will get through 6/8 more weeks of this Your information is very helpful, I did not know about redbull before looking at this site which I will try tomorrow - how often should it be taken? I will be making an appointment with my docter to-morrow for other medication and the oxegen. I am very emotional that you answered my question as it is so easy to think you are the only one suffering this living hell when nobody has even heard of it. Thank you for being there.

I am happy to help and NO you are certainly not alone. I, personally wouldn't drink more than 4 of the large energy drinks per day. One thing I do is to open one and put it back in the refrigerator. I've never liked chugging anything with lots of carbonation in it, so I let it go almost flat. That way when I get that first twinge that signals a HA...it's all ready for me to chug as fast as I can. This is only your 2nd, cycle in 15 yrs? Wow! what a luck-out. We can only hope that when this is over...you'll go another 15.

Hey mummy welcome to the board! Linda has given you some great advice, I will second the oxygen. After 30 years of these things it is still my first line abortive! You aren't alone anymore, we're all in the same boat with you! Good luck with the neuro, hoping your cycle is a short one. Guiseppi

one sure way for me to know, is after going several weeks without an attack, i will attempt to have a few drinks. it never fails! if in cycle, after two drinks (whammo).

| Much the same. I'm episodic as well. If I've gone 7 days without a hit or a shadow, I'll take the "beer test". If I pass, the cycle is over. Occasionally, I'm wrong, but not often. We're all a little different, though, and I know that most people wait longer. Best wishes, George

Linda has given you some sound advice. Get the Red Bull (I'm gonna start opening them like she said - I don't like the carbonation either, but never thought of doing that - see we all learn something every day). Chug-a-lug one at the first sign of a headache. The melatonin at night should help you get thru the night and give you some rest. (It takes a while to get in your system so don't get discouraged if it doesn't work the first night). Most of us swear by O2. If you get to it soon enough it will usually abort a headache in a few minutes. Trex or ergotomine are the two aborts that work for the majority of us. Lithium and verap are the most widely used prevents (I use topamax, but it has some side-effects that a lot of people don't like). Hope this IS the end of your cycle and that you have another 15 year remission. Hugs BD
