This is what 2 Finnish health magazines write about ch in their November issues:

- ch always begins when you're 30
- migraine treatment works with every clusterhead effectively
- sometimes ch doesn't need any medication, a massage for example will help
- the longest hit ever will last for an hour, then the sufferer will be fine
- the maximum amount of hits one can have during one day is 8
- ch cycle never lasts longer than 3 months
- ch sufferers have pain in their forhead
- ch sufferers have cold while they're getting hit

Yup, there's are Letters to the Editor to be written...

That's what I'm thinking! Grin That is why I just finished writing to both magazines. When I see things like that, I always feel bit ashamed to have education as a journalist... But then again, if I had even the slightest doubt, I used to sent my piece to the person I interviewed and made them check if I had made errors.

But to think... it would have been so easy to check it all online! I just typed "sarjoittainen päänsärky" (clusterheadaches in Finnish) and could get correct information right there and then. Roll Eyes "Check your facts" is taught on the first day! My class room even had "make it accurate, make it fair, make it fast" sign; I suppose with those pieces, they had used just that "quick" part.

I checked; one of these magazines had interviewed a neurologist. Either the journalist got it wrong and/or the neuro doesn't know that much about ch. Undecided

here in greece i ve seen only once an article about ch in a sunday newspaper and it was directly copied paste from mayo clinic book.well it had also the advertisement of mayo clinic book and it was more accurate than urs but what annoyed me was that the journalist didnt bothered to make a research of his own.everything according to sales.no need to find the whole picture of the truth and maybe help others who havent been diagnosed yet.sorry if it is somehow irrelevant but i wanted to say about that even in ur post sandy. To all: I've just sent Sanna a long article by Goadsby outining CH, presentation, & treatments, etc.

I think that sending it to the magazine authors (and the neurologist, if he can be identified) would do more to help our cause than just fussing at them.

On the other hand Mens Health did an article earlier this year that was about 60% accurate! They still had some of the old misconceptions, mostly men, tall, rugged, outdoor types, (I told you Linda is faking hers! Grin)...but outside of that the information was suprisingly accurate. They didn't list their sources but they had the symptoms and treatments relatively close. A looong way to go but we're making progress.  Smiley

I've studied journalism in 2 countries and all the establishments followed the same ideal; back in here journalist's guidelines mention also sticking to the truth and facts and writing based on them and them alone.

So because I know that they published incorrect things, I felt that it's my duty as a clusterhead and as a journalist to let them know. The amount of articles written about ch is not that huge back in here, so a least they should be as truthful as possible.

In working with the Finns for several years, and in several trips, I learned that they do love to have rules and believe that things and people follow.  I've seen groups of high school kids waiting for the "Walk" light at intersections.  One doesn't need to make 10 different option choices when ordering a meal - they have decided how well to cook the meat, what salad dressing to use, what kind of potato....  There is only one class on Finnair planes.  My gosh, Finnish doesn't even have any decent irregular verbs!  This is hard for an American to comprehend.

Don't get me wrong - I loved Finland and working with the folks there.  Actually I was in a rather nasty cycle when I was there last.  Helsinki must have the world's best airport.   Buy me a beer and a vodka, and I'll tell you a lovely story about sleeping with a Finnish Supermodel (not as exciting as it sounds).  My new job no longer sends me there, and I miss it.  But Finns have a weird thing with rules.

Sanna, I wish you good luck in getting the writer to understand the variety of symptoms we have, while still having the common characteristics that define the clusterheads!  I am truly impressed by the wisdom of the person who put together the cluster quiz on this site.  We're all different, and we're all the same.

Sanna,

Why not put your talents to work and write an article on Clusters and submit it to the magaizine as TRUTH and FACT. Get some quotes from factual sources  and present the truth to the magazine.

Write your letter and send along with your article as a "correction" to their "inaccurate" article on this disability. (But make it a nice letter so they'll pubish your article). You're a good writer - you can do it.

Quite few Finns are following the rules... Grin They do make life simple at times.

Barbara, that's a lovely idea. Smiley I have been planning a ch article actually. Some many topics to write about... Smiley

BUT one of the health magazines emailed me today. They asked if they could print my feedback in their Readers Letters column! Smiley

Actually, I guess I follow the "rules" pretty closely.  When these first hit, I was a male, in my 40's, smoking, drinking, etc.  When I finally found this site, I thought that they were describing me pretty closely.  But rules have exceptions, and you are certainly exceptional!

We are all blessed by your activity on this site.  I'm looking forward to reading your article.

Sanna,

I was hoping that they would post it in a "reader's comment" section like how they have those sections in most major magazines!!  Also, if they could post some sort of "error" update or something like that.  Some, "sorry that we got this wrong" bit!

Bad publicity, whilst it gets the name "cluster headaches" out there, is not necessarily a good thing!  It can teach the masses to misunderstand our condition.  It can make someone who suffers with CH believe that they do not.  It can make doctors who don't know about CH believe that their patients must not be suffering from it because they don't fit the criteria.  (Not saying doctors take magazine info as fact, but still - misinformation can be found everywhere!)

Good on ya for writing to them and straightening them out!!

Carrie, that particular health magazine doesn't have Readers Comments, but their Readers Letters column is basicly the very same. They will publish my comment on the next issue. Once that arrives, I'm going to check it out. They use name or nickname and I asked them to use sandie99. Smiley
