: Headache. 2007 Jul;47(7):1093-5. Links Pure menstrual cluster headache.Rozen TD. Michigan Head-Pain and Neurological Institute, Ann Arbor, MI, USA. The influence of the menstrual cycle on female cluster headache is not well documented in the literature. A case patient is presented who had cluster headaches only during her menstrual cycles. This appears to be the first ever reported case of pure menstrual cluster headache. PMID: 17635603 [PubMed - in process]

My docs have linked the start of my cluster cycles to my period, and/or hormones so I believe it...........I live it...... alicia

I find this interesting, and don't discount it, but my CH first began 10 years after a complete hysterectomy. By that time, I wasn't even having hot flashes anymore , and never used any estrogen replacement therapy. So, at least for me, the fluctuations in hormone levels played no part in my CH. That's not to say, it doesn't happen in women. Possibly, this is one reason why CH is always said to be more prevalent in men......women are consigned to "hormonal changes" because of their menstrual cycles, and it's chalked up to a "female thing" and not CH. Well, I've noticed that during my PF time, I still got shadows and even one-off hits during menstrual cycle, so I believe that. Sanna

I think that in some people this is probably the case. I actually had my 3rd episode during pregnancy when hormones are raging. Maybe it is another trigger that affects some people and not others. My CH has no real rhyme or reason. I was going every 2-3 years getting hit and now I am 4.5 years pain free.....( Currently knocking on every piece of wood I can find) Interesting Aubmari

Interesting--my cycle past 2 times "peaks" during the first couple days of my period. All other cycles before that I would not even get my period during the cluter period though. My neuro told me that he bets that my period comes late intially and somehow that helps to influence the beginning of the cycle but he didn't go into much detail.

Bizzarre! I come back to the boards and a question I was going to ask was precisely about this. I Had a partial hysterectomy in Feb (Ovarian Cancer) and I when I started to go back to "normal" (cycle wise) was in May, and that is when my cluster's started. I am still not having a "regular" cycle but I started it again this last week and my CH's started returned. I'm wondering if I should tell this to my neuro after reading this.

I have had CH since I was sixteen and am now 48. never had much to do with cycles for me. BUT, I have two children and 2 weeks after each was born I started a very painful cycle. The pain went up considerabley(bad at spelling) when I was breast feeding. Had to stop and go to bottle. They ran the normal (for me) cycle of about three months. By the way one was born in April and one in August. I really beleave hormones played a part in those two Cluster episodes for me.
