Verapamil--Questions
« on: Aug 8th, 2007, 4:58pm »

I just started taking Verapamil on Monday and have not had an attack since then.

I take 3 doses of 80mg a day (is that enough or should it be 240mg)

Does it really completely stop the attacks from happening?

anyone have success or no success with it?

I did not have success at that level, back then I weighed about 175 pounds. At that level I wasn't getting any relief and switched to Lithium, (my current prevent). It can take several days or even weeks to ramp up in your system. I'd still want to keep the oxygen tank near by.

(You didn't mention oxygen but that should really be your FIRST line abortive if it isn't already. The triptans are great as a last ditch rescue but the Oxygen is cheap and has none of the nasty side effects.)

is it possible for verapamil to work within a couple days or is it just a coincidence?

you sure 80mg for three pills a day is enough or should I contact my doctor?

I have seen dosing approaching a thousand mg a day. And I've seen success at doses as low as low as what you're taking. Work with your doctor as this med can cause dangerously low blood pressure. As with everything else about this frustrating condition, what works for one doesn't always work for another so it's mostly trial and error.

If you don't have oxygen yet as your abort please try and get that. Will abort in as little as 6 minutes for me and no side effects. Especially while you'r still in the experiment mode with your prevent, it's always comforting to know you have the 02 to fall back on!!!

Generally, it takes a couple of weeks or more before you can judge the effectiveness of Verap. Dose is about 1/3 of what many folks find necessary. Good resources in these two links.

Listen, SuperIrritant.  The last time you came here, you didn't make any friends.  Do NOT vent your frustration on the ladies of our family.

Regarding your verapimil, I dont know if 80mg 3X per day is enough.  You might consider upping your dose to 2 pills of 120mg, but, talk to your doctor first.

Aug 2nd I just started Vernamil, 120mg/day. I have had only 1 night without the beast.  I'm considering to stop it.  Tell me..Is it suppose to be a preventive or abortive? Does it usually take a couple of days or so to settle in?  I am thankful for the oxgyen I have... its a life saver.
