Hello, i am new to the board here. i have been a sufferer for only bout 7 years now. My wife found this site and was anxious for me to come here. In the past i gave up hope of ever finding out what i had. Doctors couldnt tell me anything. Did multiple stuff and examines to no end. My wife stumbled upon cluster headaches on the web and it fit to a 'T'. I went to a neurologist and he confirmed that he was positive i did have it. So i just started the experiment stage of the drugs. He gave me inatrac(shot form). when my eyes started watering i quickly took the shot. To my surprise my eye (where i get my headache) did not get any pain. i was so relieved. But my heart felt like it was about to jump out of my chest. Also i normally get attacks one to two times a day max. I had 6 attacks the next day. Needless to say i am stayin away from that now. He prescribed me Lidocaine Hydrochloride Jelly. i was to put it on a swab and stuff it up my left nostril as high as it would go.....Well i tried it today and it didnt seem to do a thing? not sure if i didnt put enough on or didnt go up high enough or maybe this drug wasnt meant to be? anybody have any experience with this drug? Also i was watching house a few weeks ago and they had a cluster headache person on there they cured with shrooms...i do not do any drugs but if they get rid of the pain to me might be worth it. anybody know if the is fictionous or not and can you get a prescription from a doctor for it?

I tried lidocaine in a liquid form I would snort up the nostril on the affected side. It provided a little relief but always made me throw up afterwards. That was in the mid 1980's. Since then I've gone thru numerous meds and settled on the following routine. I'm a 47 year old male episodic, usually 2 cycles a year lasting 8-12 weeks. When my cycle starts I go on a 2 wek prednisone taper. I immediately start up on lithium building up to 1200 to 1500 mg a day. (I weigh about 190 pounds). By the time the prednisone taper is done the lithium is up and running and provides a block for about 80-90% of my headaches depending on how strict I am about my triggers....for me alcohol, stress, sleep disruptions and letting myself get really hungry. For the break thru headaches i use oxygen...(You'll hear that a lot........30 years of these and it's still the BEST abortive for me)...occasionally imitrex injectables but like you they really screw up how i feel. Better then the headache but I always use the oxygen first and save the imitrex for when I'm getting my butt beaten. Welcome to the board, many beautiful people here and a couple of turds...all will do anything they can to help you. Guiseppi

thank you very much. i am bout the same as gettin them also. i thought they'd be done with by now actually. its been close to 10 weeks now and should be endin soon til bout the fall time. i asked the doc for oxygen the last time but he told me to try that jelly first. i will deffinetally push harder on the oxygen next visit. Does oxygen rid your pain or just help not make it last as long? If i am awake i normally have a 10-20 minute warning before it strikes. When i took the shot of imatrax i awoke from my eyes watering so bad. usually i dont get lucky to awake before it hits when i am sound asleep. I'll definetally ask bout the lithium. i am not exactly sure what the stuff is but sure i need it prescribed. thanx again. Its nice to be able to hear from people that experience the same things and know the some secrets that i get to learn. Kinda sucks knowing now these probably will be with me for life now. After my second cluster period i always forget bout them and hope there gone for good. Only to get em again in the spring time. Always thought they'd stop eventually. Kinda hard readin people that have experienced them for 15+ years. I am learning to cope with em to some extent. i just take the pain and not let my kids know what i am goin through. If i am around relatives i leave the room and go outside. I dont get them at work much but sux when i do. There only full blown for bout 30 minutes or so. Then its just soar or tender for bout another 30.

The oxygen, if started within the first 10 minutes, will eliminate the headache for me. I will be completely pain free within 10 minutes. If I let the headache really take ahold, it will provide some relief but I'll still have to do the dance. Really push for it next time!!!!!! Guiseppi

Have you tried red bull? I dont want to do oxygen at work so i gonna give that a shot also. Can you take the lithium at work or that better to take at home? I work at a printing plant. I am an operator of a wide web printing press( put my arm in wrong spot on that thing and the machine aint too forgiving lol)

We're all different but here's my 2 cents: Does oxygen rid your pain or just help not make it last as long?. Yes and yes. But i need to hit it hard and fast. If i am awake i normally have a 10-20 minute warning before it strikes. Wow! A warning would be really nice. RedBull works for some, didn't do squat for me as an abortive. But it seems a mild caffiene buzz can ususally get me through the day, but with a rebound when I come down in the evening. Read up on the Oxygen! It has few side effects when used in moderation, and has been effective for many of us.

What kind of side effects do you get off of oxygen? Also i am a mountain dew addict. I swithed to diet mountain dew couple years ago. Seems i am immune to caffiene. I bring a 2 liter to work every day. First thing i do when i wake up is grab a can out of the fridge. Not sure if caffiene has any effect on me anymore. After the imatrax i took i kinda weary bout side effects now. My body still seems messed up and it was almost 2 weeks ago i took a few shots in one day.

O2 has no side effects. Try the redbull, but pour 2 cans in a glass so you can drink faster, and just slam it! I was really surprised, it actually DOES work. For some... O2 is your best friend. But make sure to get the clustermasx. If you can't get it medially, welders O2 works just fine. There's alot of info around here about that. And if you're able to detox off all drugs including and especially imitrex for at least a few days, shrooms can be very effective for at least a break if not a complete remeission. It may take more than 1 dose though. And it beats the hell out of pharmaceutical remedies! And as far as imitrex goes, if your getting hit often I find the nasal spray hangs around and keeps the ha's away longer than the shots, for me at least... Good luck, you're in the right place.
