I think the Kip scale should be used exclusively for CH. That is what it was made for in the first place. A way to for clusterheads to describe cluster pain intensity. ( RIP BOB )

Your friend with migraines may know what pain is ... but unless they've experienced a cluster attack ... they don't really know what cluster pain is.

For me, cluster pain can be far, far worse than any other pain. I've had a broken leg, broken arm, kidney stones twice (once requiring immediate surgery), rip the tendons out in my hand ...and more .... none of it was as bad as a full blown cluster (Especially the ones that wake me up already in full force)I'd rather break a bone everyday, get shot without dying everyday, kidney stones everyday, surgery w/ no meds ... whatever .... I'd trade. For me, a full blown cluster attack is the worse possible pain. It's an insane pain personal torture session !!

I can't put a migraine on the scale because part of the misary of a migraine isn't just the pain, but the sensitivity to light and sound that makes the pain jump, the nausea, the exhaustion....its just an entirely different feeling all together.  With CH, its PAIN, with the joys of a few other things like the stuffy/runny nose, overheating, tearing eye, etc thrown in there but that doesn't really add to the misery of a hit.  With a migraine, you have the pain, which makes them pretty unbearable, but running not quite a close second but not too far behind either is the nausea and vomiting and just overall horrible feeling.
So its kiiiiinda related because they are vascular headaches, but I see the migraine involving a lot more parts of my body, it makes more things miserable instead of giving one area an uncontrollable amount of pain.
Hope that makes sense....

Like Swimchica said, it is two totally different things. I suffer from both and as far as intensity CH is definately more sever. Although migranes are less intense the consistent pain of them can put me under for a couple of days with vomitting and other things. I truely dont believe that they are comparable as far as pain.

Now way to say someone with a migrane can understand the pain of CH

I know the two types of pain are totally different and i know what a kip 10 ch feels like i was just wondering how bad a migrane pain could be but i guess they are just to different to compare. Anyway pain in the head sucks.

Well put Beth. I just hate the naseau that goes with the migraines -- the pain isn't that much (after a CH). I never even put it on a scale - I just have to keep my head still to keep from throwing up. With a CH that just isn't an option.....

I was talking to my neuro about wanting to KILL when I got hit and he said something interesting -- Homicide and suicide aren't that far apart.... ummmm. Never thought of it that way before.

But there's really no way to compare the two headaches.

Well to try to answer your question again...to take all the other symptoms of a migraine out and pretend that a migraine was as long as CH (that's the other thing that makes migraines suck...they can go on for a long time).....for me migraine pain can change.  If I am alone in dark with no sight or sound I would put it at a 1.  It's really not that bad, if you lie completely still in absolute darkness and quiet.  If you move a little, it goes up to a 3.  Ordinary sight or sound brings it to a 4...something loud or bright at my VERY worst migraine when I feel no escape would be a 5...that's the ABSOULTE worst I've EVER EVER felt from a migraine, brought tears to my eyes...and I think a 5 is generous, it still doesn't even feel right to compare them but if you REALLY want to put it on the scale, that's what I'd have to give it.  Absoultely nothing higher than that though and I'd rather stick to my first response, its a far more accurate comparison.

Lisa, I like both of your responses, and having had both I would describe the difference very much the same.

Now i would pay to have migraines, but we seem to have graduated into a tougher group Angry

Oh well 21 years without a migraine, just daily chronic HA's who am I to complain.

we did this before a few years back.  It was pretty much decided on a scale of one to ten with ch being a 10 and equal to a migraine at its worst  equal to a six.  They do not compare.

I get both. ch is worse by far. You are looking at a fast buildup vs a slow build up.  Stabbing vs throbbing.  A couple of hours vs all day(s).

i do get both, and i can not fit the migraines to the kip scale.

I've learned how to laugh at some of the things people say, just not when I'm getting hit.

Hi! It has been awhile since I wrote on here. I have been doing really well until recently with the cluster headaches. They seem to have come back  Sad (OUCH)!
Anyway, I had a former co-worker that use to irritate me all the time with her "It's just a headache, you can't be in that much pain, my sister has migraines they can't be worse than that, blah blah blah". I finally couldn't take it anymore, I let loose on her. I told her until she has a cluster headache, I don't want to hear another word about it. I brought in information for her to read and she refused. But, she never did bring it up again.

It's different.

If one has only experienced the pain of a hangnail then that is the worst pain imaginable.

If one has only experienced a migraine....

Same goes for clusters.

They are horrid and for me more debilitating at the time then the migraine I may get ever so often but at the very moment that I have a migraine it sucks.

The only thing worse is when I have a migraine then get whacked with a cluster all while having f-en icepicks all day.

Fun stuff but not one can understand unless they experience it.

What he said.

Everyone's pain is their own.
It's hard to quantify if one has not experienced the pain of another.
My migraines don't go on the KIP scale because they aren't clusters. not because they don't hurt.
My combo HA's go beyond it....it doesn't go high or wide enough to cover the sh*t my body is going through.
