Interesting Statistic. [I thought]

An article on headache that I read in a magazine called" Hospital Physician-Neurology Board Review" was titled[of course] "Migrane And Related Syndromes"
Part of the article focused on CH. The doctor who wrote the article stated [briefly] how unbareable the pain is and how it does not recieve nearly as much attention in the medical community as Multiple Sclerosis does, even though just as many people suffer from each in this country. He showed identical numbers.
Could that be possible? I have known a couple people who had M.S. I Never met anyone with this.

I had always been under the impression that Ch's are rare.  In 20 years of suffering, I have only meet one person who is also a sufferer.  I personally know 3 MS patients closely.

It's true. MS gets a lot more press, and generally, it's  easier to diagnose. Think of how many of us spent years being misdiagnosed. Dr Andrew Sewell, formerly of Harvard McLean, and currently collecting data for a potenial study on LSA and kudzu's efficacy for CH, told us that at the OUCH convention in July. That may be his article. He is currently working independently and being funded by MAPS. Harvard McLean is still handling the pending psilocybin and CH study.

With all due respect to Dr Sewell nani, I do believe it was Goadsby et al who first mentioned similar prevalence levels (based on UK stats though):

Quote:
Epidemiology

The prevalence of CH is estimated to be 0.1 per cent, about the same as that of multiple sclerosis in the UK. The male-female ratio is 3.5-7:1. It can occur at any age, although the most common age of onset is the third or fourth decade of life.

Source: http://www.hospital-doctor.co.uk/hd_news/hd_news_article.asp?ID=2498& ;Section=Feature

However, the latest figures quoted by the IoN for CH is between 0.2%-0.4% for CH.  I don't believe MS has increased so significantly in such a short space of time Undecided

I don't know who said it first, Lee... I just said that Andrew told us in his presentation.  Tongue  Wink

I also thought that the article mentioned might be Andrew's. But I'm not sure about that.  Embarassed

just ignore Lee, Nani.  I bet he's the kind of guy who paper clips his socks together in the drawer.

I think him telling you to become homosexual is a little over the line though....  Undecided

Just so y'all know ,this particular article was written by Dr. Paul Rizzoli also from Massachusetts. He is head of the Graham Headache Center. I believe he is also on the Board Of Neurology @ Harvard Medical School.

Yes, I did know that, Danny.  But, hey, thanks for stepping on my punchline!  Wink  (I'm just teasing).

As an aside to Lee ...  your callous nomenclature and presumptive labelling is duly noted and filed for future reference/retribution.  Be warned.  So tell us Lee....where DID you come up with your screenname?
