All day pain, need an answer

Has anyone had this or know of anyone with this... type of pain that lasts all day with constant throbbing and pulsing in the head that won't go away. Along with that I have a neck and shoulders that seem to be on fire with pain...burning pain. I always feel the need to pop my neck but it doesn't do anything. I'm so confused about these symptoms. At night in bed is when the one sided, eye pain, nose running classic signs of CHs show up...I don't know what this other stuff is. Just wondering if you can help. If you know anyone that has had this or if you can help with any type of info please do...have friends reply too. YES, I'm going to the doc next week just trying to find some light for myself from others that suffer the same. Thanks so much.

I think you are talking about the "shadows", or "hangover" pain that is left after having a CH attack.. Could also be that you may have a combination of migraine and cluster... But you have to see a good Dr. who will help you determine what type of headache you are having. Hope you find the answers and the treatment you are looking for in your next Dr visit.. while you get to see one, why don't you try a Red Bull? its seems to work for some people... Good Luck!

That doesn't sound like typical shadows to me if its all over your head and not one sided as your "hits" are. CH belongs to a group of headaches called TAC's - Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalagias. The pain and autonomic symptoms are pretty similar for all of these but what changes is both the length of time attacks last and also what meds help. Now I'm no doctor but what you have described does sound similar to Hemicrania Continua which is basically an all day headache with "spikes" which seem more like typical CH. Its worth discussing with your doctor when you see him as there is a very effective med for this condition called Indometacin (or Indomethacin in the UK) which will kill virtually all the pain. Its very fast acting too and should kick in within a week of commencing it. One word of caution with it though if it turns out to be something you try, its very rough on the stomach so you will need something from the doctor toprotect your stomach as I'm not sure OTC meds would protect it sufficiently. Indo is a very, very cheap drug and to be honest, I think its worth a try for alot of people as you know within a week to ten days if it's going to help or not AND you can still use triptans and O2 to abort any hits that occur too. The potential regaining of your life is well worth the trial in my opinion! I'm not saying for one minute that you do not have CH - just that the TAC's are similar and its worth investigating all your options, I would love you to find a really effective med. I hope this helps Helen

Shadows make me want to pop my neck constantly... But these symptoms sound like something else. I'd second the motion about talking to the doc hopefully for a correct diagnosis.

Thanks for the info Lelimey, I have the identical what I will call residual effects after a bad hit. Only recently have I developed a headache, ya, really a headache. It came after a terrible hit a couple weeks ago and has not quite left. Both front and back of my head. Every once in a while I will wince because of the headache, but a wince is nothing compared to a hit. My neck down to my shoulders hurt also. I crink my neck to try and help it. My Doctor put me on Indomethacin. I think it helped the headaches some, but not the neck tension. I am still getting hits which is probably why my neck and shoulder ache.

pulsing and trobbing and lasting all day sounds like a migraine to me. I get both ch and migraines. You may want to see a message therapist through you hmo or a local sallon or a health club have them. Roughly 100 an hr unless through my hmo then it is $35 and they pay the other half. But if I have it done every 3 months or so I feel great and the knots stay out. I hope you get an acurate diagnosis. It can take time. Nothing is black and white like it is supose to be.

| I'm with Limey, sounds like your doc made a good decision Pie, Indo is the magic potion for Hemicrania Continua, sometimes it just takes a while to get your dosage right to stop the headaches dead in there tracks, check with him a couple of times a week and let him know how your doing, I'm sure he'll make some adjustments for ya. The neck and shoulder might be stress related, but its just a guess. Hope you get some painfree time soon. Sean........................................

Try the Red Bull. could be migraines, sinus/allergy (tis the season) or something else. doc can determine (maybe). You didn't state where on the Kip scale the pain is hitting. I consider anything under a K-5 a shadow (some here have different determinors). Lately I've been having a lot of alergies that make my neck stiff and cause pain (not CH, but a "regular" headache). I take Benadryl. also have migraines (sometimes triggered by alergies) take Aleve for that (most of the time) and keep on going (I'm an accountant and right now can't afford to take a break). If they start rivving up I pop a can of Red Bull. Most of the time it works. Keep O2 handy for emergencies. So far I'm surviving. You might try some of these remedies till you see you doc. Good luck and let us know what happens. Hugs BD

No one here can accurately diagnose your condition. Sounds like you're getting to the doc. and that's clearly the way to go. The pain you describe is similar to a problem my brother ran into after he stood up under a low pipe and jammed his neck. He didn't think much of it a the time but a few days later began to have relentless pulsing headaches combined with neck and shoulder pain. If you've jammed your neck even slightly make sure to discuss this with the doc. Best Wishes, Tom

At times during a "high" cycle I've had 10s, that went down to shadows and then rivved back up and it seemed like they went on all day, but I think they were actually breaking - the pain just never really went away. That may be what's happening. That' why they call them clusters. It always takes me a while to get over a hit - The aftermath always hangs on for longer than the heachache lasts. Hugs BD

I hardly ever have a headache. Maybe once/twice a year and now that I think about it, I do not need to take aspirin only maybe once a year. There is no doubt in my mind the front/back headaches and my sore neck/shoulders are the results of bad hits. It helps to rub the area where the trigeminal nerve exits the brain (behind the ear of the affected side). I touch this area now and can still feel it is sore. I have not had any hit to talk about in a week. It is still the residual effects of bad hits.
