Insomnia after CH???

Hey Guys!! I had 3 nights without CH..Great! everyone would say.. but I keep waking up at the exact same time the beast used to show up.. 1:00 am..I do not feel pain, I do not take anything for it (because I am pain free ) I just can't go back to sleep until maybe 4:00 am... 3 nights of these are equally killing me because I have to be up by 5:30 am and if I take a nap during the day I will be calling the beast again!.. I am exhausted!!! Does the insomia have something to do with the fact that I am in the last month of my cycle???? I do not want to take sleeping pills, I do not want to add anything else to the bunch of drugs I have been taking for the last 2 and half months!! maybe I am just scared of getting the pain again if I sleep... any advise???? please??? The walking zombie...

I've never experienced that with almost 30 years of cycles! My guess is that you developed a nasty habit of waking up at the exact same time every night. Glad to hear your cycles ending, hopefully the sleep thing will vanish too! Guiseppi

I've always experienced the same thing following a cycle. It seems to last for a few weeks and then just settles back down again. Thankfully I've been in remission now since 2004 and hoping that I'm finally "too damned old" for this crap anymore!

Long habits of nighttime CH, it takes me quite awhile after not getting hit to get used to longer hours of sleep when five straight hours feels consoling enough and you've learned to operate with that much uninterupted being fine afterwards for awhile. I have to tell myself its ok sleep longer when its through the long tough times. In a short span afterwards, waking up occurs for me to though.

Try to stay away from sleeping pills if you can. The best thing to do maybe is to take a couple of melatonin tablets when you wake up as it can put you back to sleep sooner and helps with REMS sleep also. Have you got some soft nice music or relaxation CDs that you can listen to. Staying in bed with your eyes closed, deep slow breathing, relaxed muscles and minds will make you almost as refreshed as an actual sleep. Learning to relax and to drop off to sleep naturally would be the best thing to do here if you can. Painfree wishes to you. Annette

Thanks a lot to everyone!!! Last night I added another night of free pain YUPPI!!! but....no I did not sleep until almost 5:00 am!!! I guess I rather have insomnia than a nasty CH!!! Hope in the next few days I will sleep again like a baby I tried relaxing music, tila Tea and warm milk before going to bed ..I may go and check out the melatonin thing.. It did not help that my back neighboors had a party last night with mariachis and everything ..I should have joined them..but I am still avoiding second hand smoke...do not want to wake up the beast..if it starts going back to his hell cave I am just afraid that all this lack of rest will trigger another CH. Who knows?? Thanks again guys, I knew I can count on you!! Wish you all PFD and sleepy nights too!!!

I generally tend to be a bit of an insomniac in or out of cycle ... don't know or think it has anything to do with CH; however, I can go long periods without sleep. This past Friday was a prime example --- got up at 6:30 a.m. even though I was off from work, stayed up all day, went to the local casino in the evening, pulled an all nighter... got home around noon Saturday but didn't crash until 1:30pm, back up at 7:30pm. I've been out of cycle since January (knock on wood) so the beast is asleep for me, for now ...

The way it was explained to me is that the pain of a CH attack is so great that your body produces endorphins and adrenaline to help you get through it. After the hit is over it takes awhile for these chemicals to leave your system.

Quote:Main Entry: Pronunciation: \ˈslēp\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English slepe, from Old English slǣp; akin to Old High German slāf sleep and perhaps to Latin labi to slip, slide Date: before 12th century 1: the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored — compare REM sleep, slow-wave sleep |
| Oh, yeah, NOW I remember what sleep is .... Had to look it up ... Being chronic, I don't get the chance to find that out, but back when I was chronic, I never experienced it, but then again, I was never regular, in when I got hit. Chuck

Insomnia is not associated with CH but, in the trade, we talk about "anticipatory anxiety". This means we have learned to associate or link some event/condition with an anxiety response. (People who fear the dentist understand this one!) So, as we approach the time/event anxiety is triggered even though nothing has happened yet. If you are like many of us and feel tired after an attack, try some self-talk: "Attack has passed. I know, from previous experience, that I tend to feel worn out /tired. I'll go with that feeling and it will help me drop off." Not an easy or quick little trick but you can re-condition yourself out of the anxiety, i.e., tension producing response.
