Effexor....

Had my 50,000 mile checkup with my neuro last week and he put me on Effexor (37.5mg for a week and then 75mg after that). He said he's been having a lot of luck with this drug and CH as well as migraines (he has migraines). Said in most patients he'd put on it, HA had dropped about 80%. don't want to speak up too soon, but I'm not shadowing as bad as I was before Effexor and don't seem to be getting hit as often -- just mild ones. Has anyone else tried this as a preventative? Hugs BD

Effexor is a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, which is used mainly as an antidepressant. However at higher dose it starts to act more like an anticonvulsant and its used with good success for many people with migraines. It also has benefit for anxiety. The main side effect is sustained hypertension so blood pressure needs to be monitored fairly regularly. I am glad its working well for you. Annette

I've been on Effexor before, but for anxiety, not headaches. I couldn't tolerate it as it made me extremely lethargic. I didn't even get up to a therapeutic dose before I had to discontinue it. It also did nothing for my headaches. Best of luck to you, though!

wow, really? as a prevent? I took it a while ago(2001) as a anti-depressant. I didn't help my HA. I wasn't seeing a proper HA doc then and wasn't dx with clusters yet. what i do remember was that it suddenly quit working for me after six months and the doc said that was common. They've probably changed the formulation since then, but keep your ears perked up anyway. SO glad it's helping you!!! YAY!

I have taken 300mg for years and other varying doses for depression. It has not done anything for anxiety, migraines or ch. Keep us posted. I hope and pray that this works for you.
