Can Decongestants Trigger CHs?

I have a cold, and I've been taking either Benadryl with decongestant at night or another antihistamine with Phenylephrine HCl as the decongestant during the day.

It seems that I start getting a mild CH about 1/2 hour or so after taking these most of the time.

I keep reading that decongestants were helpful with CHs, but could they actually be triggers for some of us?

I don't know. When in cycle, 50mg of benadryl helps me sleep better, probably avoiding a nighttime hit or two. Others have reported that combining benadryl with melatonin works even better, and the next time I'm in cycle, I'm going to try it.

As is said here often, we're all different and what works for one can trigger another.

Haven't heard of Benadryl as a trigger, but it could be...

Just plain benadryl is an anti-histamine-decongestants are added in the "Multi-symptom" form.  Had not heard of decongestants triggering CH, but danged near anything is possible.

I think that the decongestants can be a negative factor, but antihistamines have been shown to be beneficial for some.

One problem with making such a link is that when a person takes decongestants, they usually have sinus inflammation that might also be a trigger.

Decongestants cause the blood vessels to constrict for several hours, followed by a rebound swelling. This could aggravate the nerves in the head that are in conversation with the trigeminal, and make the trigeminal more active.

Pseudoephedrine (another common decongestant) also disrupts the hypothalamus.

I had some sinus, chest problems this last week with a head cold that I fought off vigerously with Benidryl, and Nyquil, It was a misserabil time with the CH. I have since went on four days of antibiotics, without the benidryl and have not had one CH in the last three days sinse the antibiotics have taken hold.
It does matter keeping a clear head thats for sure, but you can over do it! I have lorazapan for the sleep!
I think the antibiotics came in and saved me at the right time.
My Trex shots were not mixing well with a full head!! Grin
