They are back......

I have begun to get headaches again. They are coming at the worse times of day to. I work with young childern with autism and I seem to be geting one everyday around 8 and 4, which is when i am still at work. I dont know what to do about it. I can't afford to take to much time off but I get grumpy and upset to easily to work with my kids.

I have no real treatment for these minus coffee and an herbal remidy that helps releive some of the pain and other effects of my headaches. Do any of you have any suggestions on what I can do. I feel helpless as I always do when I get these.

My GP never seems concerned about them, and I have to fight to get referals. I went to a neurologist but he was useless so I am trying to see a different one, though i have not heard anything from anyone about my referal.

I have no idea what to do anymore about these. I am so tired and wore out and I am only on the first week. Ahhhhhh

Hi Ashley,

Sorry to hear you have headaches. It must be difficult coping with headaches and autistic children at the same time!

You havent said what type of headaches you have though. Have you been diagnosed with clusterheadaches? Have you taken the Cluster Quiz on the left to see if you have the symptoms? Tell us a bit more about your headaches so that we can help point you to the right direction.

All the best and painfree wishes to you

Sorry to hear that they are back.
Nothing triggers them but everything triggers them. That's what makes them so darn hard to treat. A few of my triggers are, alcohol, altitude, daytime naps, airplane trips. At other times they just happen for no reason at all.
Maybe you can get an oxygen tank added to the first aid supplies there where you work. If a child swallows a toy and is having a hard time breathing it would be nice to have O2 available to keep them from suffocating. Just a thought, O2 really helps me.

Hello, aura.  I've been an episodic sufferer for almost 20 years and, like you, I do get them at decidedly inconvenient times.  Other than Imitrex, I sometimes down a Red Bull right at the onset of the attack and it does abort the bastard sometimes.

Best of luck.

Hi Ashley,

Ask your doc about prednisone and verapamil.  The prednisone helps a lot of folks, and the verapamil does too, with some here and sometimes me, thinking that the verapamil might prolong them.  It has stopped mt hits tho and am now tapering off of it.
Ever taken imitrex?

As NovellRed said, O2 has helped many here.

I am a BCBA and a Sp.Ed teacher. Though I do not teach kids anymore I am teaching the teachers and additional professionals in the field.
I have taught, consulted for lectured regarding and provided treatment for individual's with ASD's ranging from 13 months to 47 yrs for well over a decade.
When my cycle started 2.5 years ago, I had just left my position and started a small practice.
What a scare!!!
I went undiagnosed for many years and literally thought I was going to die since they previously only came at night. They started coming frequently throughout the day.
My clientelle must have thought I was a freak for sure.
Well, things work out.
PM me and we can discuss ways to personally cope while working in the field.

There are quite a few of us who work in mental health, healthcare and education.

We learn like everyone else (sound familiar) to cope and live.

This is a great resource to know like the back of your hand...print it out and give it to the doc

http://www.brightok.net/~mnjday/chtherapy.pdf

It will present the appropriate treatments that you should seek and your doctor should know!!!

If you want an abortive with the least amount of side-effects O2 should not only be requested but demanded from your doctor!!!

I have used Zyprexa as an abortive and have found it to work (for me) as fast as Imitrex and without the "hangover"
http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=medsarchive2 005;action=display;num=1120904753

If you do have the "typical" wake you up in the middle of the night horrors then.... Melatonin might be very helpful
Many of us (myself included) have found that taking 6-9mg (some take more) about a 1/2 hour to 45minutes prior to bed have Knocked out the night visits and can finally get sleep.

With the exception of 10-12 times.....I have slept through the night since August '04 (went chronic in March 05 now just awaken from a 6 month old haha).....Still get hit during the day but my overall quality of life is better because I am not as exhausted all the time.

Some people report that it seems to make them worse....The fact is that we are all different and respond differently to everything therefore it may or may not...

The one thing I will tell you as far as my experience was that I had to stick with it...The first night I took melatonin, I was awoken with a doozy only I was too groggy to find my O2 .....It got a lot better for me....I then slept through the night but would get slammed about 1/2 hour after waking up....kinda like knocking the beast off schedule.....then again I was peaking and this cycle has been all over the place with no real pattern.
I stayed with melatonin and have had decent sleep overall. (Maybe I should start folowing my own advice again but then I might not wake up for the baby and wife will give me a real headache )

It may help and it is natural with not too many sideeffects....also ask your doctor b/c if there are any side effects or contraindications...I think they have to do with mild depression.....

Like I said we are all different.

Best wishes, good luck & stay as positive as you can!!!!

Aura, what are the natural remedies that you are taking? Oxygen really helps me as well as strong coffee or Redbull and ice packs, but you need some type of preventative and an abortive which is what coffee and redbull is supposed to do. Sorry that you are suffering but glad you are here. Kiss Good luck, Jobette

Really sorry to hear you're suffering ... in what part of the world are you located? Maybe someone could refer you to a new Dr. It took me a while to educate my GP. Thankfully I found a great Neuro. that was very familiar with CH.

Does anyone know if we have a Dr. referal list by area on here anywhere? I know I suggested one some time ago, but that was a few years back and I was absent the site for a while.  Sure would be handy. In fact, I only recently moved to Dallas and haven't located a good Dr. yet ... traveling back to Memphis is a haul! Anyone have any suggestions?
