Still having shadows......
« on: Oct 8th, 2006, 8:57am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I haven't had a CH in about 2 weeks, but about the same time every evening around 6pm the tingling begins and lasts about 30-40 minutes.
I have always been episodic and once they leave, they are gone for 1-3 years.  Never had these shadows like this before.  Worried they might return so quickly.
Any ideas on this?

Have you done, or taken, anything different this cycle than you have from past cycles?

About a month ago was taking topamax and then depakote, but stopped them when I started the verapamil.  I stopped the verapamil (80 mg 3x a day) about 2 weeks ago because of no hits.  That's all I can think of.  It's just kinda scary.

Did you stop the verapamil suddenly or did you taper it off? Sometimes stopping meds suddenly can cause problems.

Sounds like you still get some vasodilatation but not bad enough to be a full blown CH. Have you tried red bull or coffee to see if it would get rid of the shadow for you?

Sending you painfree wishes and vibes.

Yes, I just stopped it totally.  Didn't think it would have this effect.
My eye tears a bit and almost acts like a full blown attack is coming with the tingling sensation, but just remains a slight tender HA.
Tried the redbull for an attack a while back with no effect.  Really cold and slugged it down.  Haven't tried coffee for these.  They are not bad, just scary to think they might be coming back soooo soon.
Guess I'll try taking the verapamil twice a day for a while.
Thanks Melissa and Annette,  ya'll really know your stuff.

Thanks for responding Annette, I got a little preoccupied.

Carl, since you have already been off the verap for 2 weeks, instead of going back on it, try taking either Aleve (naproxim sodium) or Excedrin Migraine for your shadows.  OR, you can do like I did, and try drinking ginger tea or capsules.

I just can't see prolonging the verap for the shadows.  It'll probably just take some time for it to be completely out of your system, so try and be patient.

Well I do like tea and I have brewed ginger tea before straight from the ginger root.

We'll see, just was getting a little worried that I might be going chronic.  After reading posts from the other chronics out there, don't want that at all.  Bad enough being episodic.

See ya on the boards,

The Excedrin Migraine works very well for me on the shadows.

I only take one...they tend to make me a bit jittery.

Lots of luck to you and best wishes for lots of pf time.

I'm sure you and most others here know, but I still feel the need to mention that Excedrim Migraine is the exact same pill and chemicals as regular Excedrin and its knockoffs.  It's just an extremely effective marketing campaign.

Well, I don't know what to think ya'll.  Last night it turned into about a 4 on the Kip.  Lasted about 40 mins with the tearing.

But if that's as bad as it gets, I shouldn't be bothering anyone with it.

Yall have a GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl,

From my own experience, I would recommend against starting back up on the Verap.  I had a similar lingering shadow period last season and based on advice received here, I toughed it out for a while hitting the shadows with Oxygen and Excedrine migriane.  Things settled down soon after without going back on the Verap.   I must add, that I had spent the entire prior year on Verap before I found this place because each time I cut back, I started getting shadows.  I am a beliver now in the fact that we can become dependant on the restrictors if we don't endure a bit of discomfort or deal with shadows using OTC, grit, or Oxygen.  I am very interested in gearing how it goes for you.

Now ya'll don't holler at me too much, but after I got the script for the verap, it worked so well I never persued the oxygen.  Embarassed  Thought this cycle was ending.

Haven't tried the excedrin regular or migraine.  I promise to get some today.  Should have tried the coffee though.

You know how ya can get a about a 4 or so on the kip, and ya can tell how much the pain is graduating or not?  So ya wait a few minutes to see if it's going to get worse or stay at that level?  I have been trying to stick it out to see what the beast is up to.
Thank Ya'll for all the help and support.

Hey,

I am sorry to hear about these lingering Shadows.  For me sometimes the Shadows take more out of me than the attacks just because if its really CLICKING like now I am getting just a few moments that are painfree.  I have used for my lighter shadows 600-800 mg of Advil.  One doctor who threw Vicodine at me for the Clusters I laughed at but they have helped too with the shadows once in a while.

Good Vibes

Well, yesterday I took 2 excedrin and a vicodin 750 that didn't seem to help much, maybe they did keep it from going full blown.
I didn't know stopping the verapamil would do this.

MYNM156, I am sorry to hear ya getting the shadows so frequently.  At least mine are still only once a day and last about 30 - 40 mins.
Sending vibes back at ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello chewy, I am tempted to start back on the verapamil, maybe 2x a day @ 80 rather than 3.  Didn't seem to notice any side effects at all while I was on it.
Thanks Ya'll,
Carl

I can't believe this but-I AGREE WITH CHEWY Grin
You probably stopped the verap too soon-wait two-three weeks after headaches stop then TAPER off.
Of course, if you're getting very few hits and only short shadows...well you know what you can handle...tried that new Rock Start no-carb energy drink yet?-its got green tea and even more caffeine added in to the mix-might do it for the shadows-
wishing PFDAN y'all,
kathy

Hey Kathy, I haven't tried the Rock Start, but the Redbull did nothing for me.
I thought my cycle was over after 2 weeks of no hits and it would be safe to stop the verapamil.  Silly, wishful thinking me.
Is there something wrong with agreeing with Chewy?

Hey both,
I read with curiosty all the approaches but the last time I stopped my meds cold turkey after I had been PF for awhile.  Within a week I had the worst episode ever and since that time have never had the courage to quit my preventatives. ( veraqpimil, indocin, and topomax).
PF wishes to all.

Hello Bill and Welcome,
Are you still at the same dosage or did ya have to increase it?  I was taking a pretty low dosage of 240 mg a day in 3 doses.
Just wondering
PF wishes back at ya !
