Facial Swelling with cluster headache??

The doc's are trying to figure out what is wrong with me?? I had the mother of all headaches this past week off and on for 3 days. I paced......I thought some infection was eating my cheekbone..........I bawled because I couldn't take the unrelenting pain any more. I tried Tylenol, Advil, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone. I know I took too much pain medication, I didn't care I wanted the pain to go away. The most "relief" I got was for an hour at a time. It was all on the right side of my head, but I also had swelling - my right cheek, my top lip and the space between my top lip and my nose??? I read here that some have swelling of the eye on that side and it waters. I really didn't notice that but my vision on that side did seem a little out of whack for those few days. I had never heard of cluster headaches until the ear, nose & throat doc they referred me to said I most definitely didn't have sinus infection like 2 other docs said and is going to send me to a neurologist for an MRI. Let me know if you have had any of these symptoms or can offer any words of help. Thanks for anything you have to offer!!

Beal, I just posted a reply on the Getting to know you board. You'll have better luck with getting responses if you don't post in multiple places the same thread. We all read everywhere, and we'll try to help where we can. Your pain does not sound like CH to me, but like I said in the other thread, check out the clusterquiz on the left, and see your neuro.

Sometimes my hubby's face swells and his eye will begin to squint and I get ready, even before they(the headaches) start. Hope this helps.

With that sort of symptoms and swelling, you need to be physically examined by a doctor to find the cause. I have been trying to create a mental picture of what the swelling on your face would be like and cant. Good luck with it all. Hope the mystery get solved quickly for you. Annette

Since the onset of this round of clusters the two sides of my face are different. The right side ( cluster side) eyelid droops and my eye looks larger my cheeks are not the same. The cluster side now has a near vertical line running down from my eye. They thought I might of had a mild stroke but tests say no so they are watching me carefully for more changes. My wife can look at my face and see the onset of a cluster change it. Skilly

The eye swelling (makes the face look swollen) and the eye tearing - nose running. Yep, sounds familiar.... Hugs BD

Does the swollen part of your face also get red? My doc was explaining some things to me about CH and was using the computer to show me some diagrams and things. He also showed me some pictures on the internet of people with CH who had very badly swollen red areas on half their face during a headache attack--this was quite severe looking and then went away when headache was over. I actually had never heard of this happening. I have never had this happen but evidently some people do although I believe it is unusual.

Yeah my neuro described some of his patients with that red faced effect. With how sore my skin, face, and head feel afterwards, I'm surprised it doesn't happen to me.

The only time I get any swelling of the face, other than my eye, is when I rub it so hard that I do get sores around my eye, forehead, and temple areas, that makes it swell some and get very red, but it is from the rubbing, not the headache itself.... Mikey........
