New Book...

Last night I got hit about midnight and was up for a while (first time I've had a night hit in a LONG time, but I'm in a high cycle right now so....). I try to concentrate on the TV to take my mind off the pain (till the cafergot works).

Anyhow, there was an interview with an author who'd written a book on natural cures for about everything (from doctors research). He never said what the cure for migraines was - only that that there was one. Didn't mention CH, but.....

It was interesting (I'm all for NO MEDS). His first book was "Natural Remeidies They Don't Want You to Know About". Then this new one is about the same title (can't remember).

It might be worth the read (I'm going on a google search and see if I can find the books). The weight loss herb really was of interest to me.  Cheesy

If anyone has read these books, let me know if it's worth the price of admission.

BCH,

that link is a real service. I'm all for natural cures but I can not be in denial over the fact that some stuff has been cured or successfully treated by modern medicine. spend a little time on a pancreatic cancer message board and see if the folks there that get extra years on their lives as a result of modern medicine and would rather attempt some holistic all natural cure.

look at our own syndrome. i'm lucky so far, imitrex is a god send. as much as pure O2 is "all natural", it is concentrated for use as pure O2. call them what you want, i call them all miracles if they bring relief.

the fact that this guy sells this conspiracy theory crap and those that are often most desperately needing help are drawn to his pitch is a crime. imagine if you had a stage 2 cancer that could be cured by means of surgery and chemotherapy and you could possibly live cancer free and you get this book and choose to use some "natural" remedy that has strictly anecdotal success stories and no statistical studies to back it up. the time lost allows the cancer to develop to stage 3 or 4 and then you don't have options and you've potentially lost your life. that's a crime and that's why he covers his ass so well.

I come across this all the time in my work. I am all for natural remedies whenever possible, but a really good herbalist who knows what he/she is doing is even rarer than a good doctor! There is no government regulation as to who can become a herbalist or sell herbal remedies. They can not be sued or held legally liable as a doctor in case they malpractice.

The saddest case I have seen is a lady who came to my surgery for infertility many years ago. She was in her late 30s and had tried for 3,4 years without success. She was referred to have scans and a really good gynaecologist. The problem revealed was that she had blocked tubes and would need surgery to unblock them. She was scared of surgery and decided to go to a herbalist despite my trying my best to explain to her that herbs would never be able to unblock her tubes.

I didnt see her back for a couple of years until she returned one day all teary and told me that after 18 months spending about $5k on herbal medicine and massage therapy she still didnt fall pregnant and on top of that her period suddenly stopped.

Further tests and scans revealed that she had gone into menopause and therefore lost all hope of ever conceiving again unless she used donors eggs. The gynaecologist suspected that the herbal medicines she used actually caused the premature menopause but as there can be no definite proof of this , she received no compensation for her devastating loss.

Therefore my advice is always : please exert caution when using herbal remedies, read up on the topics as much as you can and be informed of the risk/benefit, dont just listen to sale tips, our health and body are too precious to play with.

JMHO.

Hugs and painfree wishes to everyone.

Annette,

I know you're a doctor and respect doctors (just wanted to be clear about that). I'm just a diehard for home remedies (grew up on them - back in the old days we didn't go to the doctor all that much and were healthy).

I'm writing a book on Horse Sense and have a chapter in there about WHEN to bother the doctor.

For instance - I use Valerian Root for back pain (I've had three back surgeries and sometimes - not often - have severe sciatic pain). It works better than anything I've ever taken (and I've had some GOOD stuff) and no side effects. Except it smells awful (like dirty gym socks).

Right now I'm looking for a "home remedy" for a spained arm Cheesy . My doctor told me that at "my age" it just takes a while to heal.

My daughter-in-law is a RN and gets upset with me when I tell her to use one of my home remedies rather than take a bunch of pills. (She's always constipated and takes a lot of laxatives when I keep telling her bananas or prune juice will work just as good  Wink ).

Guess what I'm trying to say is I just keeping hoping that there's a simple remedy for CH. I'm just tired of having them.

Hi Barbara ,

I am all for natural remedies too. I hate taking medication myself. When I get a cold or flu I would rather take vitamins C or eat heaps of fruits and veges and drink gallons of water than a tablet. The last time I took an antibiotic for an infection was like 5 years ago.

Thats why I got a degree in acupuncture also and I practice it regularly, wouldnt have done that if I wasnt interested in alternative treatments.

All I am saying is make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision and learning about risk/benefit and especially important to know HOW they work before trying them, thats all.  Smiley

I would love to read your books.

Hugs

Barbara,

I'm with Annette on this.  I'm not a Dr. and don't even play on on TV, but if Kevin Trudeau was selling $100 bills for $1 I wouldn't buy one from him.  He has been involved with more scams than you can shake a stick at and served time for his involvement with one of them.  I think if I remember correctly they got him for tax evasion because they couldn't pin him for more.  I should look it up to be sure, so don't take my  word without checking.  I do know he was involved with  starting Herbalife and was kicked out of it for making exagerated claims.

A lot of herbal remedies have at least a basis for their use, else people wouldn't have used them for years.  Some are better than others, but most are old wives tales.  Just use "horse sense" as you are writing.
