I can't tell you how greatful it was for me to have found this site. For the first time I felt that I was not alone. Every time I explained to someone about my headaches they would say that they to get migraines but no one understood the severity of mine and not even me understood that they were in fact clusters headaches. But I do have some GOOD NEWS to report thanks to you and your information and I hope this too helps someone.
After reading as much as I could about CH and all of the possible remedies I choose oxygen as my method of treatment. At first oxygen actually made my CH worse and so I changed my protocols. See I suffer from CH at the early hours of the morning, mid morning and afternoon every day for as long as I can remember so I figure that in order to control this evil I had to control my first one. I then decided to use oxygen every night before going to sleep. I used 2mg of oxygen for 15 minutes every day for two weeks and did not get a single headache. I then felt brave enough to stop the oxygen and I am happy to report that I did not get a CH for over a year.
I must add that I also practiced meditation, relaxation (massages) and stop hearing talk radio and changed over to soft music. All in all I feel like a new person and have a lot more confident knowing that the CH are gone.
But the story does not stop here. This year has been somewhat difficult for me in the finacial area and just about two weeks ago I suffered my first CH in over a year. I did not get another one until just this week and I figure it too would just go away but I get tension got the best of me and the day after I suffered from the worse episode I've ever suffered follow by another the day after. So I decided it was time to get my oxygen back out. Last night I used my oxygen as I did before prior to my wee morning episode and I did not get one. I think oxygen really works and for me I have to use it prior to an episode in order to be efective.
And there is more: My 11 year old son also suffers from headaches. Thanks to this website we've learned to describe our headache and I think he inhereted this demon from me and he is in the migraine category with clusters coming on the horizon. Oxygen was not an option for him because his headaches are too impredictable (although they were daily) and we had too keep reminding him etc. so I did more research and came up with NO (Nitric Oxide). For the last three weeks I have begun my son in a ARGENINE supplementation and he has been headache free ever since. He has had one or two minor headaches when I have taken him off the argenine for more than two days. Argenine like oxygen (at least for me) cannot be used when you have a headache but before. He takes just 500mg of Argenine every morning which is a very small dose and he goes through his day great. His entire demeanor has changed and he is very happy about it.
Sorry this post is so long. I am not a good poster and I highly doubt that anyone will read this thing when they see how long it is but I had to post it because I really owe it to clusterheadache.com I have since spoken to lots of people about it and I hope they too have found comfort and relief.

Read a post I started under Specific Treatments. The name of the post is Arginine. There are also lots of good responses. Nitric Oxide does keep your arteries and veins playable but I am sure that is not a cure all and that some people may not find relief with Arginine. My son did.

I hope you read my reply to your thread on arginine, Mayo Clinic does not recommend its use especially for cluster and does not recommend use in children younger than 18.
Please reconsider giving it to your son. It increases growth hormones, increases sexual drives, decreases fat absorption and increases muscle mass as part of its many side effects! Not particularly healthy stuff for a 11 years old boy.

Also I must correct you on this. Oxygen is used as an abortive not as a preventive and this is why:
What causes a cluster attack is that something triggers the blood vessels in the brain to swell up to 20 times its normal size, this causes pressure and pain, once its big enough to squash the trigeminal nerve next to it, it will cause nerve pain as well as eye pain, droopy eyelid and tearing.
The brain tissue uses oxygen at a very strict concentration level . So when one inhales pure oxygen deeply enough and the level of oxygen in the brain exceeds its normal level, the brain will automatically shuts down its circulation by quickly vasoconstrict all vessels, less blood at that time = less oxygen comming in. The brain does this as too much oxygen to brain tissue can damage it. So this reflex is an innate survival one that we all have. However, the minute the oxygen level is regulated, the blood vessels will start to relax again.
This is how and why oxygen is used as an abortive. By itself it has no vasoconstriction nor dilatation effect but only when inhaled deeply enough and at a high enough flow rate that it tips the balance of its concentration in the brain tissue, causing the brain to vasoconstrict by itself.
Therefore taking oxygen at a time where there is no vasodilatation will not do anything. Plus its effect can not last more than the 15 mins or so that one uses it. Thats why if its not working in 20 mins, then using more wont do a thing. So oxygen can never be used as preventive the way you described above.
Also I dont understand what you mean by taking 2 mg of oxygen ???? Oxygen is air, its not a tablet that you can weigh in mg !!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.
