Brain Freeze

I know there have been several discussions on that "ice cream headache" aka "brain freeze" you get when you eat ice cream too fast or suck down an Icee quicker than you should and the various theories as to whether it means anything to us clusterheads. I recently experienced a brain freeze and I noticed it was on the right side - my CH side. Thinking back, it seems every time this has happened it has always been a ch sided thing - even before developing ch. I don't ever remember having a left-sided brain freeze. So, is this the norm for clusterheads? Think back as much as CRS allows you to...Have any of you ever experienced brain freeze on your non-CH side? Just curious.

Starts right in the center of my forehead and includes both sides....however, this is an excellent analogy to use to describe CHs-imagine a brain freeze that gets in your eye, ear and jaw, lasts for 30 minutes to 2 hours...whenever I've used that analogy the response was "wow! that's horrible." kathy

I get them middle of forehead and then spreads to both sides. But you know you raise an excellent question--what the hell makes the cluster go to the side it chooses? Another cluster mystery. Star

| I have read that there is extra grey matter on the ch side of the hypothalamus, which is a great explanation until you consider those who have the ch switch sides on them. I wonder if those people have extra grey matter on both sides?

Good question, Mike. I've never really thought about it. I don't get "brain freezes" very often because I guess I don't eat/drink cold things quickly (I slowly savor my Klondike Bars). Next Klondike - I'll inhale it and see where the freeze hits me. But it is an interesting question. Sandy

I dont have CH and have never experienced a brain freeze no matter how quick I drink a very cold drink. Does this mean that CH sufferers are more prone to brain freeze? Would your relatives/spouses who dont have CH get brain freeze as "easily" as you do? Just curious! Or maybe I have no brain so there is nothing there to freeze? Annette

Hey Gator, I didn't know there was extra grey matter on that one side but that would explain a lot. Very good question what would be the deal for those who have it switch sides on them. I have always thought it was crazy how it seems to "lock" in to one side--there is definitely something making it "convenient" for the cluster to hit the chosen side. And for those whose side switches there must be something going on. Mine did try to switch sides only once in 18 years for a few seconds first night i took melatonin (don't know why and neither did doc) but it was weird like it was trying to break through into full blown headache but couldn't at that time (the shock of melatonin to the system threw a wrench in its plan) and then made a desperate effort to break through onto the other side but that fizzled out. Maybe when they figure out this question it will help unsolve some of the puzzle. Star

I can't say that I've noticed a brain freeze hit the cluster side (my left)--it seems more centered in the forehead to me, extending down to just about where the nasal bone joins the brow. Since I suffer from CRS, and hadn't had a brain freeze in a long time, I induced one by buying a slushie and chugging it this evening. Experimental, you know. The brain freeze sort of hurt, I guess, but it was over so fast that I really didn't have time to pick it apart in detail. Best, George

That is the exact way I described it to my husband and parents. I said it is like an intense brain freeze that last for a couple of hrs. There eyes got big and I have gotten alot of symptathy since then. BTW I forgot to add I get them on the right side same as my ch.

Hey Mike, I've never had a 'brain freeze' headache - maybe it's an American thing Or maybe it's the warm beer over here On that note though, I have noticed my hangover headaches tend to be ipsilateral on the wrong side -Lee
