Looking for neurologist

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to locate a neurologist that is familiar with cluster headaches?  We've seen a neurologist and he's done all the tests, and there is nothing physically wrong.  We told him we thought they were cluster headaches.  All he gave us was a perscription for ERGOTAM and it does nothing but keep my son up all night.  He said he thought the headaches may be from low blood sugar and suggested eating peanuts.  I asked about a perscription for oxgen the other day and he said he couldn't give us one.  I am getting the feeling he really doesn't know much about clusterheadaches.  We need something to help my son.

If anyone knows of a good neurologist that works with clusterheadached in the Salt Lake City, Ogden, Utah  area I would appreciate a heads up.

Sorry to hear you're having a bad time. The following link will take you to the OUCH website where there is a page of sufferer recommended doctors.

There are several for Utah, maybe one is in your area.

Good luck,

Hi Jeannie,

Sounds like you're having a rough go.

I couldn't find anything on Ergotam...except a reference to Paracetam.     Looks like that's for headache pain and nausea.   I'm not a doc...so I'd have to go back and check it again.

I assume your son has been diagnosed with CH?   How old is he..and how long has he had them, if you don't mind my asking.

Oxygen works for alot of us, it's hard to believe a doc is not willing to consider the 02.

Please keep us updated as to how your son is getting along.   Hope you find a doc close to work with you.

Good Luck, and PF vibes for your son.

1. Search the OUCH site (button on left) for a list of recommended M.D.s.

2. Yellow Pages phone book: look for "Headache Clinics" in the M.D. section and look under "neurologist" where some docs will list speciality areas of practice.

3.  Call your hospital/medical center. They often have an office to assist in finding a physician. You may have to ask for the social worker/patient advocate.

4. http://www.achenet.org/physicians/   On-line screen to find a physician.

5. http://www.headaches.org/consumer/index.html Call 1-800-643-5552; they will send a list of M.D.s for your state.I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder"Wink which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician.
