Lemonade Fast

Hi Folks,
I'm new here, but have had clusters for 40 years, every 18 months lasting for about 8-16 weeks.  I've tried everything, though imitrex injections are best, and the imitrex tip here was a real revelation.
I've been seeing a nutrionist and as a last resort, she has me trying a lemonade fast for 10 days.  Two tablespoons lemon juice, two tablespoons pure maple syrup, and a touch of cayenne pepper to 10 ounces of water. 6-12 glasses a day.  I'm on day one, and before I continue too far, I want to know if anyone else has had any exoerience with this type of treatment

Never heard of anyone mentioning that concoction before. I've heard that the lemon juice will help prevent kidney stones if consumed regularly. As far as any of it helping clusters ...   Huh ... I doubt it.

Glad to hear that Imitrex works for you too! And goodluck with your treatment! Let us know how it turns out.

It sounds way out there to me but if it works what the hell. I'm curious as to her reasoning behind this regimen? Glad to hear the imitrex tip helped.

My body is polluted with toxins, parasites, bacteria etc. that builds up every 18 months to cause my cycle.
I've tried vitamins, suppliments, etc. to no avail.
So this is a last resort.

Your brain is polluted with a quirly hypothalmus like the rest of us that has caused a neurological problem that you were born with but if it makes you feel better than awesome!

Keep a journal on here to let us know how you are doing so that it may suggest some level of empiricism other than what many crystal toting nutritionist may suggest.

I wish you the best and welcome to the nuthouse  Grin

Word of caution. Don't get too far away from a bathroom during your fast/cleanse.  Seriously.  Dude.   Shocked

I highly doubt that this is going to do much to affect your (as E-Dub put it Wink) "quirly" hypothalmus but ... you probably will feel better overall.  Know this about cleanses though - about mid-way through, it's very common for a very real depression to set in and that can be disastrous for clusterheads.  Please be very careful - that's a really long time to do a cleanse and it will get old REAL fast for you.

I don't mean to discount your theory and I hope you do see some improvement but...nutrionists aren't exactly neurologists.

Please keep us posted with your progress.

Thanks for all of the responses.  At least I know that others have the beast in their head as well.  I'm ready to try anything, really sick of having a hot knife shoved in my eye 3 times a day, sticking needles in my leg, snorting nasal spray, and feasting on percs. And that's a good thing when it works.  If it doesn't, hours of misery, but I'm preaching to the choir. So far I've missed breakfast and lunch, yelled and cursed at 2 of my staff( thiough they did deserve it) and have a meeting to either straighten the problem out or fire both which happens in 20 minutes.  Did I mention I slammed my office door just for effect?  I'm a Business Manager/ Human Resorces Manager and have a lot of pressure, etc. so clusters don't help my sunny disposition.
I'll keep you all posted, but so far no one else has tried this, which concerns me a bit.

Jefferson Headache Clinic in Philly returned my call so tomorrow I'm beginning their trial med Zomig.  Though I'm not too excited by the response from the med survey, at least I'll give it a shot.  Maybe it can help someone else.

My husband did this about 17 years ago, as a diet aid.  I tried it, because I liked the taste.  I wasn't paying attention to the headaches, but I did get very light headed, and discontinued.  My husband kept it up for awhile.

It did not help him lose weight, though.  He's still a little chubber.

Go ahead and try it and let us know how it turns out....

For a while (years ago) we were all trying grape juice and Ginger Ale. Pretty tasty - don't know if it helped but it didn't hurt anyone.

I've worn banana peels around my head all day. Smiley

NOTHING is stupid if it works. Go ahead and give it a try.

banana peels?  How does that work?  Is it something on the inside of the peel or the outside?

Just teasing, but like you said, I'd try anything.

I think my banana peel experience was chewing on the icky inside of the peel, or something like that.

That lemonade fast is called the "master cleanser" and several celebrities have used it to lose weight. Some websites claim it can be used to cure almost everything.

Foods definitely have an impact on hormones and neurotransmitters, and in theory this fast will keep your blood sugar up and get rid of the saturated fat that cuts levels of seratonin production, so it may help SLIGHTLY and in combination with other things may help end a cycle if you are episodic, especially if your normal diet is crap. Apparently at least one person previously has had good luck with a similar "detox diet."  Fasting also thins the blood and reduces inflammation, all of which might help.  http://www.med-owl.com/clusterheadaches/tiki-index.php?page=Fasting

Following a no-added-fat low-glycemic vegan diet (except an essential fatty acid supplement) did get me ONE pain free day, the first in over a year, but it didn't stop me from being chronic. Overall, it got me three somewhat better days, but then the pain returned with a vengance. Of course, I was also using RC seeds at the time, but the seeds have never been that effective in the past. It may have been the combination.

I am on day 2 of the lemonade thing, and today is a lot better than yesterday. I had my usual 3 clusters yesterday, but thankfully I am eposodic.  I can't even begin to imagine how a chronic sufferer functions.
My prayers are with you.  God help us all.

If you go to Walgreens they have Colon cleaner that's guaranteed to cleanse your system.  Grin  I'd bet a whole bunch it won't stop Cluster headaches though.

ps: I'm not sure of the survey you looked at, but many people here like Zomig better than Trex. Definately worth doing the trial in my opinion.

I'm a "Zomig beats trex" person myself.  Worth a try.  And Rock, we really have been known to try anything-I inserted capsican based muscle pain cream up my nose with a q-tip one time and rubbed same all over right side of face-blistered, ow, ow, ow. Got hit anyway.  Have also tried several "cleansing " programs.  My least favorite was drinking cabbage juice and eggplant water for 7 days.  My gosh, the gas Shocked  Anyway, my point is, good luck, hope it makes you feel better in general-not sure how its gonna change your screwed up hypothalymus.
Good luck and wishes for PFDAN for ya,
kathy
