Strange symptoms?

Gary and I were at a social function Saturday night. He started to suffer a severe CH early. Fortunately, friends of ours that were there are a non-practicing MD whose sister has CH, and his wife, who is a practicing MD. Ann noticed Gary looking terrible - sweating like crazy. She pulled out the light and checked his eyes. He had no pupilary response whatsoever out of either eye. They grabbed him out of the party, took him to their home (about 2 minutes from where we were). On the way there, he used the Oxylite O2 canister we drag around with us. But he was shaking like crazy. When they got to their place, she gave him a shot of some type of steroid, and she made him chew some Imitrex pills. He was experiencing a K9. It cleared up in about 10 minutes. (Don't know what steroid was used). The non-practicing Doc's sister had never experienced anything like what Gary went through while with the two Docs. They don't know if she just hasn't gone as high on the Kip scale. But the lack of pupilary response really concerned both of them. Both have worked ER, and said they've never seen that, ever, unless it was a stroke, a coma, or someone dead. Because he responded so quickly to the steroid shot, and his pupilary response went back to normal, they're pretty sure it is just CH, but they really encouraged him to see an actual neurologist and get an MRI/MRA (?). We're back to work, so we'll be able to afford this soon. But in the meantime, I'm left wondering - anyone familiar with this symptom? (And the violent involuntary shaking)? Thanks, Laurie

"no pupilary response whatsoever out of either eye" "violent involuntary shaking" Seems to me, if your friend was an MD, they would've ( should've) called for a ambulance asap and got him to a hospital at once. You'd better afford a doc / neuro soon or it might cost someone their life UNsolved

Hi girl I have indeed had a non responsive pupil but only in the cluster side wifes a nurse and seems to feel the need to check these things now and again. Sweating like crazy allways during silent attacks seldom during the real deal. Many times during massive pain I have caught my legs or arms shaking but never my whole body sounds like hyperthermia which can be caused by a couple things that I know of. First maybe an allergic reaction or reaction with drugs. Which a steroid would help. Second and depending on the drugs used I would look at serotonin syndrome or a serotonin storm. sweating and shivers go together. I know you yourself have written a little about this too. A link here. http://www.australianprescriber.com/magazine/26/3/62/3/ With the drugs used extensively and sometimes excessively for CH I am surprised we dont hear of this more if it were serotonin syndrome

Thanks, MJ. You're right - it does sound like serotonin syndrome. He did stop taking the 5-HTP because he's been taking a decent amount of Tramadol, and we didn't want to run the risk, so the probability is low. The sweating is very normal for him. He heats up like crazy (and quickly) during an attack. It was the other symptoms that (to us) were so strange. We called our Doc and he said it's possible there was no pupillary response in his right eye because of the cluster (though he really knows very little about it. He's a family doc, not a neurologist) and the other eye was being "sympathetic." As to the shakes - could easily have been an allergic reaction too - we were at a restaurant. I suspect he's developed a number of allergies, but lack of insurance/paying job has prevented us from getting a lot of things done that we should. Thankfully we're back to it, so apart from Neurologist and MRI/MRA, we do need to add visit to the allergist..... Thanks again for the input, Laurie

A steroid injection would probably not help much if it was serotonin syndrome, and chewing imitrex would only make it worse. Sounds 'neurological' - which doesn't really explain it, but the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance was way out of balance. Epilepsy, hyperthermia and low blood sugar are a few things that come to mind when you talk about the shakes.

I have gotten hit more than once while sitting in the eye drs chair. I get hit on the right side. My right eye gets non responsive. Meaning it gets bad vision and no matter how many lenses he changes and tries to correct my vision to get a corrective lense for me he cant. It will not change. It stays the same like 20/40 for example. When not getting a ch its 20/20. He has seen me every couple of weeks for like 3 months and was just baffled. lol I also sweat alot and my blood presure which is always 120/70 rises really bad to wear they get concerned.
