Question for anyone who is currently chronic. Did you start out episodic and then just had a cycle that wouldn't end after years of episodic? Or where you always chronic? Thank you. Karrie

I was episodic for years and then in Oct of 97 I just had a LONGGGG cycle that has never ended. I think at times I'm going back to episodic, but it ain't happened yet -- but the hope keeps me going. Kip went episodic to chronic and then in 2002 (or 3 I forget) he went back to episodic so it can happen. The beast has it's own agenda and will let us know when he makes up his mind which way he wants to go. We just live with the results. Hugs BD

Karrie, I was episodic first. In my case, one cycle just went on and on and on and eventually I had to admit that I'm a chronic. I've been PF since April, so there's hope for everyone! Wishing you lots of PF days, Sanna

Curr Pain Headache Rep. 2002 Feb;6(1):65-70. Related Articles, Links What predicts evolution from episodic to chronic cluster headache? Torelli P, Manzoni GC. Headache Centre, Institute of Neurology, Strada del Quartiere, 4, Parma 43100, Italy. paolatorelli@libero.it Over the last few years, attention has increasingly been focused on the evolution of cluster headache over time. Predictive factors have been identified that are correlated with an increased risk of unfavorable evolution from the episodic form to the chronic form of cluster headache. Late onset, the presence of sporadic attacks, a high frequency of cluster periods, and short-lived duration of remission periods when the headache is still in its episodic form all correlate with a possible worsening of the clinical picture over time. The reasons for evolution of episodic cluster headache to chronic are still unknown, but some factors, such as head trauma and other lifestyle factors--eg, cigarette smoking and alcohol intake--have been suggested as having a negative influence on the course of cluster headache over time. Hi Karrie After reading these posts, I find I must be atypical. I have been chronic all my life. I have no memories of pain free cycles, even as a kid. I tend to fear pain free days any more, as the monster seems to get really pissed off at me and attacks with a vengence afterward. I take it by the question that you too are chronic? Dragnlance

Came out of the gates chronic. First cycle continued for 2 years non-stop after which I was blessed with a 3 month break. Over the last 11 years I've been blessed with a few 1 month breaks now and then. My last cycle was the longest - continuing for over 3 years but I've finally gone into a remission that at present has lasted 1 month. I know this remission won't last forever but I'm praying that at least it will be a long one. I have never had cycles that were predictable in length but they (active cycles) average just over 1.5 years. Seems this nightmare likes to mix things up to keep it interesting. How long has your current cycle been active? Tom

Chronic from the start 1974-2004....been pain free since and I have no idea why...they just went away. Being chronic I never had the fear of the beast returning, now I do and I think it was better for me to be chronic. I dont like looking over my shoulder for the devil!!

| Jonny, I couldn't agree with you more. There is nothing worse than tasting a little freedom but fearing the day/night this thing decides to return. Tom

CHronic from ever since I can recall...at least 22 years by all accounts. The frequency and timing of the attacks had morphed a number of times driving me back to different doctors and different mis-diagnosis' , but never did I get a full 30 straight days PF in all these years. Two years ago, March 6th, 2004 is when the beast really morphed on me and was the catalist to a correct diagnosis. Still CHronic by definition, but things are much much better in the last year than in the previous 22+.

Chronic since the day I woke up with my first one. Episodic would be nice. Dr. Bigal told me I was one of the most intractable chronics he had ever seen. Haven't found a medication that will help so far. Got the most relief I have ever had from shrooms, unfortunately....I wasn't one of the lucky ones that it took PF. It did help, and it really made the 02 work better. I'm using RC seeds right now. They are helping. Without triptans (or seeds or shrooms), I haven't gone a day without at least 3-4 ch's. So is life.
