Taste in my mouth

Now, on most message board I would expect a lot of crude replies to a topic such as this, but I am very happy to know I can ask this question and get serious answers here as well. For a while this cycle I have had a metallic taste in my mouth (seems like it is just in my lower teeth). I can rid of it for a short amount of time with brushing, flossing, gargling, or eating/drinking but it comes back and seems to always be there. I don't remember seeing this as a side-effect of Verapomil (which is the only med I am on right now) and I have it even when I haven't used my O2 for days. Anyone had anything like this? P.S. I am going to try Melatonin after reading a link provided by E-Double for a 3rd time. I didn't use a high enough dose before, but since the expert in that article said it was his first choice, I figured it would be worth trying again. Here's hoping I don't have the monster 3AM hit I had the other time I tried it.

Yes !!! I had the same thing for the past two cycles. The most recent ended about 21 days ago. I asked the doctor what it was and he told me it was normal---doesn't happen to everyone and doesn't happen throughout every cycle. As soon as he stated that it was normal I just put it out of my mind. Good Luck and may your current cycle end as soon as it came.

| I figured I would get no replies and have to find an alternative reason for this. Thanks so much.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Hi Fram, Jonny cracks me up. You set up a perfect straight line then pull the rug out and he still got in a funny. Have had the metallic taste you describe for years (on and off). Did not seem related in any way to CH but did find through research that it can be related to allergies (of which I have many). Will pay more attention to timing. Regards Jon

Hey Fram, I've been having the same metallic taste this current cycle. It was a lot worse a couple of weeks ago and seems to go away a little more each day. I've been on Verapamil for years and never had it happen before. I thought it might be from my Prednisone cycle, but I wasn't sure.

This taste happened well after I tapered off Prednisone. I was on Topamax (no longer) and Verapomil when it started and it hasn't stopped. I am begining to believe almost everything is a symptom of this crap. Today has been a horrible day for me because my kids were up every 2 hours last night and I just started Melatonin. My daytime HAs have been worse and I don't look forward to trying to sleep. (sorry for the whine.... I'll go get some cheese)

Sounds like you did the same drug cycle as me. I did Topomax for 1 wk before giving up, but the metallic taste started before the Topo. The taste didn't begin until a week or two after the end of my Prednisone taper. I was going to start a thread about this, but I thought it was unrelated. Who knew?

I credited Topomax with ending my first cycle even though I have no idea if that is what did it. Quick question: Can an injury/or other medical condition end a cycle? 1 day after my last cycle ended, I started having arm pain that ended up being 2 bad disks in my neck that needed surgery. Within 1 week after the pain was finally over from the surgery, this cycle began. My current Dr doesn't think Topomax is worth trying until I have tried Verapomil, Mygranol, and probably Lithium if it gets bad enough. Obviously O2 is in the picture too and tripans (when not on Mygranol, of course). This is the only reason I have tapered off of Topomax this time.

When I first made the bad taste connection to CH I started thinking more about autonomic symptoms. Most of what we read on CH only mentions the prominent autonomic symptoms such as: tearing of the eye, nasal congestion, reddening of the eye, running nose, swelling of the eyelid, and so forth, but what about the uncommon autonomic symptoms? I kept asking myself could this bad taste be an uncommon autonomic symptom. To answer this question I needed to learn more about the autonomic nervous system. In a nutshell I discovered that there are a great many number of other things besides extreme pain that CH can do to us.

Salt. Not tin, cadmium, zinc or lead. Salt. Last fuckedupnotacycle shadow zone for 3 months, every time I hit O2, all I could taste was salt. Every time. Strange business, this. RJ

| I went to Walmart this morning and this was the first thing I went to grab. I'm giving it a try today. When I talked to my wife (a doctor) about this taste and that you all had said it was something you had experienced... she said it made sense because of the nerve stuff. I don't want to know what else can happen, just that I am not out of my mind. Knowing this taste is normal makes me feel better. This last few days have been emotionally very tough because the O2 isn't working and I am waiting on the Mygranol from the mail-in pharmacy (they wouldn't pay for it through a local pharmacy). Right now, I am trying Melatonin but my sleep has been HORRIBLE the first 2 nights.

This is the first year I have noticed a significant taste as well. Not metalic, but salty. Down the back of my throat. I feel like I am part of the movie 'Close Encounters' and should now be screaming "this means something, I know this is important". I file it with the rest of the symptoms that make me think I should be seeing a panel of Dr.s and not just a Neuro. Probably an ENT and an Optomologist. Throw in an Endocronologist and a few specialists to be named later. Then I could watch the fun as they argue over which pills to push.

This is kind of going with the topic on 'cluster lumps', but yesterday something cool happened around noon. I was standing there and sniffled a little. Next thing I know, I have this drainage of stuff down the back of my throat. No more stiff neck, no more salty taste in my throat. I slept for the first time in weeks without a CH. Had a kip2 this morning after I got up, but very minor, and that was after some extreme neck rubbing (yes, I taunted the devil). I don't know what it means, but it means SOMETHING!
