mixing triptans
« on: Jan 15th, 2006, 9:23pm »

I've read that mixing triptans is not a good idea.

Does that just mean multiple types should not be taken simultaneously?  I might need a Maxalt for my midnight hit and my Imitrex ran out last night.  I'm looking around the house for a loose Imitrex, kind of like a crack addict!

Thanks

Yes, exactly.  Dont take maxalt within 24 hrs of imitrix.  Or any of the triptans like axert, amerge, frova, etc.

You should not use migranol or DHE within 24 hours of a triptan also.

Take care.  It can cause heart failure, etc.

If you take a maxalt then you are not to take an imitrex unless you want to risk a cardiac event or worse!

you should not even take an imitrex injection and then an imitrex nasal spray!

What you need is an additional abortive like oxygen and or zyprexa which you can use along with a triptan if needed without risking death.

Remember CH will not kill you but the meds can.

Be well and do not mix!!!!

Just got my first supply of imitrex injectable. Doctor  stressed again and again that they can't be taken within 24 hours of my cafergot, (My other med of choice) She said it would be comparable to crossing the beams on ghost busters....bad stuff man....

I wish I had known this before.  I mixed triptans without knowing.  Although I don't think I ever took 2 different ones in a 24 hour time frame.  I was seeing which triptans would work and never paid attention. (Now that I think again, Im sure I did)

I'll never do that again.  I knew I couldn't take more than 2 doses of triptans in 1 day but i didn't know you couldn't take different kinds in a 24 time period.

Check with your pharmasist.  Triptans dont interact with eachother.  They work synergistically (or together) and so the problem is that each has a different dosage and it is possible that 25 mgs of trex is equal to 100mg of another and so using the two too close together can cause a cardiac event.  What that event is could be a fast heart rate to a heart attack.  Find what works for you and check with the professionals.  That what they are there for.

I used trex and maxalt together under my doc's supervision for one cycle. It was the only thing that worked at the time. Now I use trex vials, and syringes. Each vial is equal to the amount in a stat dose injection. I split them into thirds, so I get 3 shots from each vial. This allows me to use the same overall amount I'm allowed in one day (12 mg) (6, 2 mg shots), but I end up using less, because less works, and I don't get the same side effects, i.e. itchy burning scalp, tired feeling, etc...

If your doc says no to mixing, though, then don't do it.

NOT a good idea. Do not mix triptans. Check with you doctor. Been there done that. I have never been so sick and will die before I ever do trex and frova again. Been there done that. At least when you check with the doctor your family can sue him. You can take different triptans but you MUST wait 24 hours between doses.
hope you are still with us.

I've taken Imitrex injections and DHE within 4 hours of each other on several occasions at hospitals. You just have to keep an eye on your blood pressure.

I don't think mixing Triptans within 24 hours is a good idea either, but if the pain was great enough and I felt I had no other choice, I would probably do it anyways. (I'm glad I don't have to. The jabs work great)   Wink

If I am to understand this correctly:

I feel the aura first, then the CH starts ramping up, I take an Axert, but unfortunately 20-30-minutes later, it’s still ramping up, I feel I have no other choice, so I relent and take a shot of Imitrex to abort it.

This is a bad idea?

Excellent name!
Follow it!

Yes you understood correctly.

Axert takes too long to work and if it is still ramping up then you see the problem.

Imitrex appears to be a double edged sword.
It will wipe out an attack very fast yet some seem to think that it will increase the frequency. A study suggests the same.

When I was in your shoes I would just take the trex first and or find another abortive like oxygen with the proper set up.

Good luck!

Its possible.  If you have not yet then try the Trex first when it starts coming on.  I dont usually get a second chance I feel it coming and then within a few moments I am HIT.
Good Luck Man!

When in doubt, check with the Pharmasist. They know the drugs better than most doctors. I would call your pharmacy today to ask them directly... ( just my suggestion)

carrie, you are under your docs supervision. Although Maxalt takes longer to work, it lasts longer. I was taking maxalt and trex, but I would use the trex first, it works faster, then the maxalt would kick in and last longer. Ask your neuro if you have any questions.

Hey also those of us who take mega doses of verapamil.  Is gonna be working aginst those side effects of the triptans.  So when asking let them know all that you take and just because the Doctor prescribed them doesnt mean he's on top of it all.  They have to be reminded and that why I use them both but get my bulk from the Pharmasist.
