Hello everyone, my name is Melissa.  I have just recently started an episode.  It is my first episode in a couple of years, and unfortunately it is really bad right now.  I have only been getting one headache a day, and they always wake me from a dead sleep between 2am-6am.  I am just now in the process of finding a new doctor.  The last doctor I saw was very unhelpful.  I am very happy to have found this sight; it will definitely be very helpful.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Welcome Melissa!

Sorry you had to find this site, but glad you did. I think the info you find here will help you in your fight more than anything.
If you can, print out some of the info you find here and bring it to your doc, or new doc. If you can't print it out, give the web address to him. It should help you both find the best methods of treatment.

Good luck, and pain free wishes,
Adam

Welcome to the board! When you get a second let us know what you've tried, how you tried it, and what levels, if any, of success you've had. Maybe we can make some suggestions that'll work for you.

Sounds like you're episodic like I am. Meaning you get creamed for a while, he leaves then comes back again! That being the case when you get in to see a doctor you'll want to ask him about a 2 pronged approach.

You will want a preventative medication. That's something you take while on cycle that reduces the frequency and/or intensity of the headaches. I use lithium, 1200 mg a day, other common prevents are verapamil...at doses higher then most GP's are used to, and topomax.

Then you need an abortive strategy. That's what you take when the head ache starts! I use oxygen, and occasionally the injectable imitrex when I'm really getting beaten down.

That's a readers digest condensed version but it gives you an idea of the strategies. You need to demand oxygen from your doctor. I can abort almost every headache, in under 10 minutes, by breathing pure oxygen. Click on the oxygen info link on the left because to be effective it must be used correctly.

Congrats on finding this site, it's what gave me my sanity back!!!!!

Welcome HOME Melissa!!

sorry to hear you are having a hard time with the beast  Sad

while you get to see a Doctor, try melatonin at night about 9 mg..It is over the counter and helps with the night hits,

also try Red Bull, it is a very good abortive..

Please keep in touch and hope your cycle is a short one!

Wishing you lots and lots of pain free time!!
