Newbie with a concern

I recently started with what my neurologist explained was cluster type headache. This started for the first time in August, although I do not have it nearly as severe as some others, it does concern me. At the start I had the headache in the left eye, cheek etc, not severe symtoms, but every day for about 2 1/2 weeks, since then the headaches come about every other or every three or so days. My concern (neurologist says its part of it, but I really have not seen anyone else in my research get this). I have the stabbing pains (ice pick, knives in head or burning on top of my head and down the left side into the ear, etc. After I have an "attack" the whole side of my head on that side feels sore, even if I go outside the wind feels so sensitive on my scalp. I have my EEG this morning, and my MRI Monday, but I am concerned. Thanks for any feed back you can give!!

Hi Malbers Sorry to hear you have these awful headaches. I am glad though that you have found us and are posting questions, they are the first line to getting to know then to control whatever condition you may have. Its important that you note down the exact symptoms of these attacks. When do they occur, what time, how long they last for, the characteristics , where and how do they hurt, do they change or remain the same ... as there are many conditions related to CH but are different. The symptoms and signs can overlap so its important to get them right. What you have described so far doesnt sound typically like cluster but maybe ictal headaches. Have you taken the cluster quiz on the left hand side to see how many characteristic symptoms of cluster you actually have? MRI and EEG will be good to rule out anything organic or nasty so they are good to do. Update us with how you go please. Take care and painfree wishes to you. Annette

Welcome aboard. Good luck with your tests and your appointments. Have you clicked on the OUCH website to your left? It has an illustration of the trigiminal nerve. There is also a search feature, up it the left corner but this side of the ch.com menu. You can click a box & specifically search this site for what you are looking for. Good luck, Marie. The important thing is that you do not have to feel like you are the only one going through this.

Please follow up on this as BB said. We all have a little different presentation with CH, which is one of the reasons it is hard to definatively diagnose often. I hope it is another form that can be more readily treated. Take the quiz and look carefully at the cluster traits. Print out any materials that you think might be helpful to your Dr. If he is not one that treats CH on a regular basis he is probably unfamiliar with more than just the basics, which in turn leads sometimes to false diagnosis, although usually the other way around. As to your sensitivity following an attack I often will have a similar sensation in my right temple, but I blame it on pressing on it and bruising the area. I do notice a slight swelling there during an attack though. Hope I didn't confuse you beyond where you were before. jc
