the doctor that refused to help!!

Ive just got back from the doctors and what a waste of time!!!!I had an attack right there in the reception and had to ask the receptionist if there was any where quiet that i could go to deal with it.She kindly took me into a room at the back until the doctor was ready for me.In the doctors room i was in so much pain that i could barely speak i was sweating, shaking, tears were streaming from my eye.I asked him if he had any imigran to relieve the pain to which he just replied "No!"
I did my best to explain the constant pain i was experiencing daily but it was right before his eyes.I explained that the meds i was on (pizotifen) werent doing anything and that i was getting between 5 and 8 hits a day most of them at night.I'd taken along a few print outs from this site documenting the best treatments.I asked him for some ergotomine as this seemed like best thing for me ( i cant take verapamil as i take a propranolol beta blocker for something else). He refused to read the print outs, and then said he couldnt give me anything until id seen a neuro.I explained to him that id already seen a neuro and that by the time he sent me to see another one this bought would have ended. All this time im going through an attack.I said that the last time id seen one it had taken 3 months for the appointment to come through and i needed pain relief now. Then he said "well the waiting lists 6 months now. Youve lived with it for this long a bit longer wont hurt you!!" I honestly couldve punched him in the mush!!This quack i might add is not the usual dr i see but ive been in so much pain the weekend that i took the first appointment i could get.

Is anyone else shocked at how uncompationate this man was?

Im going to see my usual dr tonight but other than that i dont know what else i can do.Im taking imigran injections which are fantastic at killing the pain but they'll only give me 4 at a time so even with halving them thats only 8.Ive got some O2 being delivered on wednesday..I need a decent preventative to reduce the amount of hits im getting.I just hope that he doesnt speak to my own dr tonight (He's my usual dr's boss) and stop him from giving me anything.I feel so fed up and depressed!!

Simon,

The bright side is that O2 is on the way. I hope you are among those of us that it is effective for. It will change your life if you are. Got your non-rebreather? Are they bringing a reg that delivers 10-15 lpm?

No, not surprised. Some docs suck. Some are great.  Same thing can be said for everyone from waiters to garbagemen though however. It would be nice if the medical environment would allow you to start phrases like, "Now look here bub! You're gonna listen and then you're going to pick up your little pad and your gonna start writing. Repeat after me......."

Here's looking to Wednesday night!

Gee, only six month waiting list for service like this?  Sure wish we had socialized medicine over here! Angry
That kind of non compassion should be criminal.

Hang in there.  You might want to try Red Bull until you get the O2.  It helps me.

I think the prednisone should give you a break of at least a week or so.  It's not going to stop the cycle however.  I'm not sure what meds you can take, but now is the time to start on another preventative.  The steroids should give you time to let the preventative build up in your system.  Sorry to hear about your doc, some are good, some are unbelievably awful.

dood - who has told you that you cant take verapamil while your on propanalol ??

even if this were the case (which it isnt) i would drop the propanalol and take the verapamil in a heart beat.

im sure there is an alternative to propanalol, but nothing has given me relief like verapamil for the CH.

oh, and if your doctor is putting "suspected cluster headache" on the referral to the neurologist then this should be treated as an emergency and you should be seen within the week.

hope this helps

Thanks for the advise but it would be dangerous to take proranolol and verapamil together! propranolol is a beta blocker (which i take to stop my hands trembling - i need it for work) and verapamil is a calcium channel blocker both of them lower your heart rate.To take them both together would be dangerous. My last doctor referred me because of cluster headache and the appointment took 3 months that was about 3 or 4 years ago.I suppose different regions have different rules.

Basically he's a shit doctor which is why i never usually see him,he's seen other members of my family and he's always making up excuses as to why he cant do anything.I was so desperate i took the first app i could.I saw my own dr last night and he gave me the prednisolone (although the dosage seems a little low)

Any idea how long it should take the prednisolone to kick in?Ive read on here that a course of prednisolone can bring a bout to a halt anyone got any experience with this?

a note to everyone DO NOT take propranolol and verapamil together, i have been told this by 2 doctors and 3 pharmacists!!We dont want any heart attacks, cluster headaches are quite enough!!! Grin

Sorry chop but the figures youve given me the only patient that took them both together deteriorated, which isnt encouraging.Every time i go to get my propranolol prescription i ALWAYS get warned NEVER to take the 2 together as it would lower my heart rate too much but i suppose it depends on what your taking them for.I havent got heart trouble at all (i hope!)

Trust me bud i wish i could take the 2 together it would solve all my woes but my doc refuses, and i only take 40mg propranolol!

But thanks heaps for bringing this to my attention,Ill definately ask my doc next time i go.

By the way chop i bought my car from a garage in warrington called car planet - a jap sports car imports specialists - they had some amazing nissan skylines there (£50,000 upward!!!! i wish!!).Is that anywhere near you?

I have used Prednisone to halt my last three cycles.  I typically takes about four days once I get to the right level.  60mg seems to be the magic number.  On the down side, it makes me a crippled babbling idiot due to extreme anxiety, sleeplessness, and whatever the heck it does to my hips/joints.  It takes a couple of months for me to be able to walk normally after a cycle. This year , once again, I am committing to toughing it out without the pred, but typically two weeks in I can't take the pain anymore and give in.  As I get older, it seems to take more of a toll on me each time.  I'll be looking hard at an alternative treatment this year.
