Back After Eight Years!
« on: Jul 24th, 2006, 4:18am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

My old friend came back to me: I woke up at 12:45 with sharp pain, watery eyes, runny nose.

I had gone eight years without CH--maybe 1998 to 2006.  Why the cessation? I don't know.  I had lost weight, smoked less, gotten married, had kids.

This week, while playing basketball, I knocked out a tooth and loosened another--could that physical trauma be the cause?  Or perhaps the resultant marital stress that my injuries created (a long story)?  Or the combination thereof?

Luckily, the pain, while intense, was brief; I resorted to my usual home remedies: strong coffee and Tiger Balm applied to the affected side.   Soon after I drank the cofee, that glorious post-headache daze/haze came.  Do you know what I mean?

I remember searching for CH help on the internet in the early 90s--I'm glad to see the progress.  But hey!  All in all, I'd rather not have to know you!--Our acquaintance signifies pain!

Are there any other sorts out there with remissions of equal length?  Have you folks any advice?  Do you know of a CH specialist in Southern California--I live in Burbank.                                Capitis dolor racemo sanandus est!

Welcome back, but sorry you're here.

My remissions are typically running around three years now.  They used to be much shorter--about six months.

I've worked it all out but the "sanandus" part.  My latin is old and rusty.

Some philosopher-type said: "Why? is the most painful word in the English language." Drop the issue: endless rumination/guessing only increases the distress.

1. Search the OUCH site (button on left) for a list of recommended M.D.s.

2. Yellow Pages phone book: look for "Headache Clinics" in the M.D. section and look under "neurologist" where some docs will list speciality areas of practice.

3.  Call your hospital/medical center. They often have an office to assist in finding a physician. You may have to ask for the social worker/patient advocate.

4. http://www.achenet.org/physicians/   On-line screen to find a physician.

5. http://www.headaches.org/consumer/index.html Call 1-800-643-5552; they will send a list of M.D.s for your state.I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder"Wink which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician.

Finished a 2 year remission, (longest ever), in November Now into my 8th month of this cycle, (longest ever!) There is no figuring the beast, only battling it. Good luck on your search for a knowledgeable neuro. The good ones are worth their weight in gold.

Sorry you had to, but glad that you found this place.  I know it has been a big help to me.  I do not know anything about longg remissions, but some here do and I am sure they will chime in.

If you are not up on the latest treatmentss you might want to have a look here:

Also,  if you haven't experienced the wonders of Oxygen , be sure to review the Oxygen info on the left panel. It is a lifesaver for many of us.

My longest remission was four years. Grin

However, I think a remission started a week ago  Cheesy

I hope you have a quick recovery.

Thanks to all who have replied--not so bad last night--but I did have that imminent feeling--right before bedtime--yet it never blossomed.  I still have imminent feeling now, so we'll see.

I'll keep working my way through the site; one immediate thought that struck me--why can't we get OTC oxygen?  Or is that possible?

George--I can't vouch for my own Latin perfection at all--just three years in college--but I wanted to come up with a signoff a la Cato.   sanandus is the gerundive, i.e. future  passive participle, of the verb  sano --to cure, heal (sc. sanatorium, sanity, sane).  That is a passive periphrastic construction with sum (sc. Carthago delenda est).

The thing I guessed on is racemo; I made that the ablative of means of racemus (cluster [of grapes]), but now I think I should use the genitive of description.  That would make my ending tag dolor capitis racemi sananda est.  That means something like this: Cluster headaches must be cured! I welcome improvements from any other Latin scholars there--hey!--Could Latin study have an etiologic effect?

I just found this site also. Mine are back after 19 years. I've been married for 18 years so my wife had never seen this. Oh by the way dear, I may turn into a raving screaming lunatic tonight.

Hi Big guy,
Get your wife along to this site, let her read up about CH, let her chat to us, we'll help her understand and we'll support her too. Its hell on earth watching someone you love go through this and those who go through that hell deserve every reward life has to offer.
She is more than welcome too  Smiley

Sorry Big Guy--
Have you had an injury that might have triggered the relapse?  Anything stressful?  Or perhaps just the heatwave that's been gripping the northern hemisphere?

I've been feeling the foreshadowing throb for about five days now--but I've only woken up twice in pain.

Good luck!

Clusterheads have gathered and archived lots of info on CH since 1998. Good luck finding something that helps  Smiley

Not to me it doesn't.  My acquaintance with everyone here over the last 8 years signifies family and  support.
Kind of like the glass is half full instead of half empty.

I'm VERY familiar with Burbank. I spent most of my life in that city until I had to get out of the smog, traffic, gangs, crime and congestion.  I will do some checking for you as to a Dr. there and get back to you.  Check your PMs periodically, o.k.?   Smiley

Thanks, Linda.
A word in defense of Burbank; we plead guilty to smog and congestion, but we claim to live in a city with few gangs or little crime.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.
