Hi to all, I was quickly diagnosed (lucky by the sounds of it) in the late 80 (I was mid 20's). Had 2 episodes in 3 year. I really thought i was done. Nothing until this past April and these are worse than I ever remember them being years ago. I am acually getting quite desparate. It feels like if i could just sneeze (clear my nose) or crack my neck (i have moderate pain in the back of my neck), it would help relieve it. Has anyone here ever tried a Chriopracter? I have never been. Always heard bad things, but am willing to try anything for relief. Any suggestions would help. thanks so much

Hi, I have tried the Chiro twice, but they didn't help. I have found great help in Acupuncture, but you have to find the right person (probably the same with the Chiro). The Kudzu and Taurine seem to be helping me in the short time I have been taking them, and they are OTC, and not very expensive, so it can't hurt a thing to try them. Also, many folks are haing success with the 02, I have not tired in again since 1991, but it my cycle keeps up much longer, I sure will try it again. What are you doing now to help - abortives, meds, etc? We're here to help!!

I love my chiropractor. But, unfortunately, it only helps to relieve the pain that I get in between attacks. When my attack is over, my pain in the neck (literally) does not go away. It is almost like I throw my neck out by slamming my head into things. Go figure! The therapy that he offers is great for that. After the adjustment, he does ultrasound right on the spot that connects my head to my neck and down. It is great pain relief, but doesnt do anything for the cycle. Sorry.

thanks to both of you. Currently, I am on Verapamil and Midrin when the demos shows up. I was using Maxalt, but that really was messing with my heart / system. But i will definately try the OTC's that you suggested. thanks again

I also tried the Chiro after he convinced me that my CH were due to a mis aligned spine. The popping and cracking felt really good but that night I got a kip 9...needless to say I never went back. There is no cure...only temporary relief (sometimes).

Hi. It's really interesting that you mention the neck-popping thing. When I get a H/A, some of the sensations radiate down along the back of my neck as well, and seem to settle in a spot near my spine at the base of my neck on the headache side. In cycle, I have a prominent ganglion lump there, which disappears a couple of weeks after the cycle is over. Anyway... I spent years convinced that if I could jusssssst moooooove my neck a cerrrrrrrrtain way and make something pop, that the H/A would go away. I tried for a really long time, but could never make it happen. Guess it didn't work. Probably for the best. If I'd ever found the "sweet spot" my head would probably have unraveled like a ball of yarn. Best wishes, and welcome to the site. George

Your treatment options are so much broader than they were just a few years ago. The starting point is to have a good talk with your doc and make a treatment plan. Here is a link to read and print and take to your doctor. It describes preventive, transitional, abortive and surgical treatments for CH. Written by one of the better headache docs in the U.S. (2002) http://www.brightok.net/~mnjday/chtherapy.pdf ------- MANAGEMENT OF HEADACHE AND HEADACHE MEDICATIONS, 2nd ed. Lawrence D. Robbins, M.D.; pub. by Springer. $59 at Amazon.Com. It covers all types of headache and is primarily focused on medications. While the two chapters on CH total 42-pages, the actual relevant material is longer because of multiple references to material in chapters on migraine, reflecting the overlap in drugs used to treat. I'd suggest reading the chapters on migraine for three reasons: he makes references to CH & medications which are not in the index; there are "clinical pearls" about how to approach the treatment of headache; and, you gain better perspective on the nature of headache, in general, and the complexities of treatment (which need to be considered when we create expectations about what is possible). Finally, women will appreciate & benefit from his running information on hormones/menstrual cycles as they affect headache. Chapter on headache following head trauma, also. Obviously, I'm impressed with Robbins' work (even if the book needs the touch of a good editor!) (Somewhat longer review/content statement at 3/22/00, "Good book...." HEADACHE HELP, Revised edition, 2000; Lawrence Robbins, M.D., Houghton Mifflin, $15. Written for a nonprofessional audience, it contains almost all the material in the preceding volume but it's much easier reading. Highly recommended.

Hi and Welcome, Bob really gave you the best of links regarding the most current available treatment for clusters. Your Verapamil is certainly on track, but Midrin rarely helps any kind of cluster pain. If you have a problem with Tryptans, Oxygen is probably your best bet for an abortive. It's a great help to many on this board. Check out the link to the left. Hugs, Kris
