Back to the board again!!

Hi folks!! Wow how you have grown since the last time I visited the board!! My name is Mark and I live in Houston, and unfortuantly, have suffered with CH for 18 years now. They started at age 18 and I am 36 now, and just started a cycle on Friday. I have not had a cycle for over two years now, thanks to acupuncture, but this one snuck up on me. To provide a little background, from my first cycle in Jan of 1989 to the day I found acupuncture, my cycles lasted 8 weeks, twice a year, in Jan and July - just like clockwork. 3-4 HA a day for the entire cycle, severe pain, 8s-9s-10s every time. I really thought I was not going to make it through each time, and every cycle got worse. I tried the 02 starting back in 1991, and it helped a bit, but was not a cure all - sure didnt hurt anything though. Normal meds were Midrin and some type of narcotic. Later on, found the Imitrex and it really works - still does to this day thank God. Anyway, in 1996 or so I read an article about the Presidental Press Secretary that had CHs and was caught on a flight from Europe to DC and had his meds in his baggage - in the baggage compartment and unaccessable. He said afterwords that he would try everything known until he found a cure. He then came across an article on acupuncture and gave it a try, no more CHs. Well, I found me an Acupuncturist where I lived at the time and went to see her. She said it worked in about 50% of the cases, and sure enough, I was in the 50% that it DID work for. I got my life back, not 100%, but manageable. Now I mention all this and you are probably thinking, didn't he say he just started a cycle? Yes - the bastard snuck up on me, and it is my fault for not listening to my body telling me that he is still out there and was lurking... I did a search and didn't see much on acupucture, so I will start another thread to discuss it and how it has worked for me - I know that when I am suffering, I will try anything different at least twice, and if one person here gets help from it like I have - then it is more than worth the few minutes of my life it takes to chat. Good news here is that it looks like since the last time I posted, 2002-2003 that the base of folks here has sure grown - not that I am happy there are more of us out there, but that more folks have found this wonderful resource to talk and share ideas. Please feel free to contact me in any way if anyone ever has questions or just needs to chat. I understand what you are going through - and truly - only another sufferer can really understand. See you all on the boards!!!!! Mark Walker

Mark, with the larger crowd might come some very negative reactions to your words. Many have tried it all, with no luck. Please stay calm and help Clusterville understand your sitch, coz, as we know, no 2 CHers are alike in what works. Glad you are not using the Midrin....and Imitrex is very widely used.....effective for many. I guess I would like to know more about the acupuncture. What was done, how long it took to work, and how effective was it? 50%? 100%? All the time? Part of the time? The ONLY way to get to a point for a cure is to continue to share info and ideas, here and with the Neuros. Please stick around Ranger-it's a really great group, and there is a wonderful sense of family, as well! Wishing you PF! Cathi

| 1991?.......LOL......were you using it at 15 LPM and using a non-rebreather mask? If not you should really check it out again!! 02 didnt work for me cause I was not using it right, I came here and with what I was taught I stopped over 60 HA's in a row with 02 (not wake up full blown ones) Give it a try.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Cathi & Jonny, Thanks for the notes. I would never mean to offend anyone - my participation is only to try and help anyone who suffers from these horrific things. Through sharing what works, maybe we all will get better. To Cathi - why do you say that about the Midrin? It had worked ok when I was using it. I completely understand about the Acup and skeptacisim here on the board. My first Acup helped me. Then I moved and had to start looking for a new one. The second and third - no help at all. But, having had success before, I knew I just had to keep looking. Found the 4th and bingo. This guy is even better than the 1st. Jonny - been so long I don't even remember dose of the 02 etc. I had read way back then that it was working for some people and I was willing to try anything. Like I said, it worked ok. It would not stop an attack, but it would lessen the severity a bit. Again, better than nothing!! You are right about giving it another go, though. In particular if I was not using it correctly. If I was not using correctly then, and it helped any, should be worth a try now that it is know exactly how to use it now. Thanks again!!

You're right, Mark, if it's working, it's worth it! I guess I prefer to think if 02 can work for you, the less you depend on drugs, the better off you are. Midrin is becoming almost as popular as trex as an abortive, and I'd give anything to have you PF. What more can you tell us about acupuncture, Mark? Inquiring minds........encouraging words! Cathi
