New Year's Eve is coming...

... what are your plans? My family has never had that clear New Year's Eve traditions. Yes, we ate good food, watched some special New Year's Eve program on TV and had lots of quests over the years. But every year has been different. Last New Year's Eve I spent with Timo and his friends and this year... we'll be here at Jyväskylä, doing nothing much, because I managed to catch a nasty cold with persistent cough. So we're going to eat great food, watch a good movie and then admire the fireworks. I love the fireworks, so I hope to see some good ones this year and I also hope that Eetu and Kasper are not afraid of them... Sanna

Well, tonight we're going to the Botanical Gardens for the Winter Gardens Aglow Festival. Look at the light displays, partake of some goodies, listen to some music. We don't usually like to drive around much on New Year's Eve itself, since it's Amateur's Night (for drunk drivers). We've been invited to a couple of parties, but we'll probably just stay at home, watch the fireworks display across the river, and go outside to bang on some pots and pans when the new year ticks over. Best, George

...no plans but for a nice long hot bath. Soak the past year down the drain and start the New Year clean and fresh. A glass or two of wine, a good movie or two. Possibly a steak from the grill, and a lobster tail? All depends on what the prices are when I get to the store today. No date, no one to kiss at midnight. No drama...LOL.

We're thinking about making it our family tradition to start stealing other people's family traditions. I'm open to ideas.

| Ours is dull, too. We generally don't even stay up till midnight. Now, my parents' tradition...you can try that. Throw a HUGE party every year. Mom starts drinking at 6PM, Dad doesn't come out of his man cave until guests start arriving. (Thank God Dad doesn't drink) The more Mom drinks the more she suddenly likes Dad (they never speak otherwise) Mom comes on to Dad, Dad rebuffs... then Mom (whose shitfaced by now) decides she hates someone at the party. Mom starts a fight with said person... ...anyway you can imagine where it goes from there. It's no wonder I hate New Year's parties.

I do not want to bring anybody down, but ever since I lost my dad on New years eve at 7:30pm 20 years ago we do not do anything special or have a party. Angie and I go to M&M's Meat Shop and buy some Seafood and other yummy food and stay home and eat until we fall asleep. The only way we see midnight is when we wake up off the couch to go to bed, which is usually around midnight! Happy New Year!!

We are going to have a nice dinner, good sparkling wine and several sweets. We watch the new years since Australia and so on on TV. We watch the New York celebration on TV, we wait until the new years makes it to Texas, eat the twelve grapes making wishes exactly at 12 then hug a lot and kiss a lot and then run with some lugagge back and forth by the door, coming in and out of the house (to ensure lots of traveling) sweep the front porch (to get rid of bad vibes) and put some coins by the entrance so the money will come in all year. Then the phone calls to Mexico start at this time so we can congratulate the rest of the family who is also doing the same: celebrating!

I put on a pot of blackeyed peas and cabbage (if I think about it a pork roast to go with them) and of course hot water cornbread (my mother would turn over in her grave if I forgot that) - then try to stay up till midnight to eat that feast along with a bottle of champaigne. This year my kids are going to a party and I'll have my little Caleb so we're having our own party. He's looking forward to trying the "bubbley stuff". (Ok, so Granny's a bad influence on the little one - come on -he only takes a sip or two!). Did I mention that I HATE blackeyed peas? I eat 365 (this year 366) once a year after midnight for good luck (it had better work this year!!) and that's it for the year! Whoever started that damn tradition should be shot! And Chewy -- cabbage is good for you -- it kills the taste of blackeyed peas! Thow in some hot-water cornbread and you'll barely taste the darn things. Been doing it for over 60 years!! Happy New Year Ya'll..... Hugs BD

| Holy shit, Rosy! I'm exhausted just reading this. So much for stealing other people's traditions. I think I'll check out ch.com, scratch my belly, fart, and then go to bed. I've played out with various bands on too many New Year's Eves to want to do any more than that.

| So if we want to find you New Year's Day we just look for the cloud? My wife is cooking up a Seafood Alfredo over Linguini with Shrimp and Scallops. We'll pop in a few movies that Santa brought that we save for this night. At midnight we switch to watch the ball fall in Times Sqare and then carry the sleeping kids up to bed. After all the craziness of the holidays it's our tradition to slow things down on New Year's Eve. However my older kids are all getting together at my Son Evan's condo to ring things in a little louder than we are -Dennis-

Well we have a new years eve tradition. For the last 15 years we have celebrated with our church family. Some families volunteer to host or open their homes to others and there name gets put on a list. Then you sign your name up at a home that is hosting so they know who is comming and how many. Then come New Years eve we eat, drink soda, play games, listen to music, have a foot washing service and read a statement from the Pastor on his vision for the new year. It is a blast. It really brings you closer to others in your church that you might not normally associate with and is a great way to make friends. Last year we hosted this year we are not. I can't wait.

Hopefully this year will be different than the last 10- we're trying to get my bro- and sis-in-law over for the evening and have a semi-party-ish thing. Rosy, your traditions sound wonderful! This year, I'll sweep the porch and put some coins out... sounds like a very cool tradition! Hugs, Jen

There is no tradition here but we often have a BBQ, usually at a nice park somewhere, then go down to Sydney Opera House to watch the fireworks then head home to watch some nice movies and sing Karaok until we either run out of voice or we run out of songs to sing This year we wont be going to the Opera House to watch the firework though because I am on call and more than likely will get called in to work for a few hours !
