Nephew heading to Afganistan

My Nephew Seth is in the Navy. His first trip to Iraq was on the USS McFaul as part of the Enterprise Carrier Group. He saw action boarding vessels in the Gulf to assess possible threats to the fleet and inland on search and rescue missions. A few months ago he volunteered to do guard duty for high value prisoners. It was either going to be Gitmo or Iraq. Last week he got word that he is going to Iraq. Seth comes from a broken home and spent as much time at my house as he did anywhere else. He is like one of my own kids. Thusday night he is comes home for a final leave before beginning his journey. January 4th he leaves us for three months of training with the Army followed by 6 months on deployment. I can tell he is scared though he won't admit it. We're all scared for him but remain steadfast in his corner. I asked him why he volunteered for duty on dry land when he had all that steel to float around in. His answered; "If not me then who?". My God I love that kid. He's turned into a man before my eyes. I finally know where a gratful nation finds such men as these; in our homes. You can bet we are going to do our best to make sure he has the best Christmas imaginable. -Dennis-

He answered; "If not me then who?". Damn - that made my monitor blurry . . . . . . My son's best friend will be deployed in Iraq after the first of the year. I'm so proud of this generation. Reminds me of the men and women of the Greatest Generation. How do we deserve men and women like this? We pray for their safety, thank them for their sacrifice, and love them forever.

My Husband is ex Army. And was over in Iraq the first time, as well as many other places. The way that my 5 yr old explains it is "Daddy went to war to keep everyone safe here. And that Daddy was lucky and was able to come home." You did a great job helping to raise this man, thank you, and thank him from a Family who understand what what he is is standing up to defend. Give him a HUGE hug for me. Tia

What would be really cool would be for Seth, Rob (Jerry's son), Karla's son and anyone else who is heading overseas to send us their lists of things that they need so those who are interested can send them some great care packages. Hope I haven't overstepped my bounds here with the above suggestion but it's something we can do to support our CH families.

Dennis, I'll be sending well wishes to your Nephew. Hope he returns safely. He has a right to be afraid. Anyone who says they are not would be a liar or just plain crazy. Were not made of steel you know!!! Anyways, tell him thanks for me too. He sounds like a fine young man !!! Cheers, Dave

Seth came home last night. His Dad picked him up and drove him hear for a bit. It was great to see him, give him a hug and have some quick laughs. He looks great and has a new sleeve tat. They do some nice work in Norfolk. I went over his orders with him. He's headed to Bagram Air Base in Afganistan, not Iraq. More spiders and snakes. Same bad guys. We're gonna make the best of his short time home. I'll be letting him read through this thread Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Thanks so much for all the support and well wishes. -Dennis-
