What Is This?

This was one of my first pics I took with my new digital camera. We were catching a breather while biking a year ago last spring and I looked down and saw the soil pushed up with this plant coming out of the ground. I took a close-up pic of it and was shocked by how it looked on the computer. I forgot I had it and thought I would share it with you. I think it looks kinda creepy!!! I know what it is now, can anyone else identify it?

| Tony, this fern probably has quite a few different names, we call it something else here in Canada.

Well . . . right now it's a DORMANT fern. I'm used to the ferns that produce fiddleheads when they sprout. This one doesn't look too fiddleheady to me.

I must have been away from school that day we learned about ferns because I had no idea what it was but everyone one I showed the pic to said "that is a Fiddlehead" There are billions of these around. I have been told that they are very good fried up in butter. I said before I can not eat something that still has a head on it and this fern sure looks like it has a devilish head, that is what makes it creepy to me. This fern was about 4 inches tall when I took that pic, just used Macro only. Thanks for all your input.

Fiddlehead is not actually a variety of fern, it just describes the look of the sprout of most any fern. Quote: Quote:I'm used to the ferns that produce fiddleheads when they sprout. |
