Never called the herring we used that. Always just Sill.
This can't be the same thing, Svenn. Pickled herring is good in small doses....even the Swedish.

Stuck my arm in its snowsuit in a barrel of the stuff at one of the old Swede grocers here when I was a little boy. Mom was not happy and always said she threw out the snowsuit. It did stink.

Found this:

Sweden's national dish is an acquired taste, to say the least.

Some say surstromming, a fermented herring, smells like rubbish left out in the sun for days.

But now the fish has been banned from several major airlines, classified along with dangerous weapons like shoe bombs and firearms.

The Baltic herring is fermented in barrels for months before being put in tin cans, where the fermentation process continues.

The decision has made many Swedes very angry indeed.

Surstromming is as Swedish as Volvo and Ikea.

Some say it is simply rotten fish, which smells like rotten fish. Others argue it is the finest of delicacies.

National symbol

But now major airlines like British Airways and Air France argue the cans are pressurised goods, and must be classified as potentially explosive.

The dish is no longer allowed on their flights, and the sale of the delicacy from Stockholm's international airport has been stopped.

That has made producers of the surstromming choke on their fermented fish, calling the airlines' decision "culturally illiterate".

It is a myth, they say, that the tinned fish can explode.

They admit, however, that a punctured tin would emit a foul smell, and that the content might spill quite forcefully, like a punctured can of beer.

But that is not enough to stop the export of a potent national symbol, the herring supporters argue.

The leader of the Swedish Surstromming Academy, an organisation promoting the dish nationally and internationally, said any airline worried about explosives and foul smells should first ban bottles of champagne and French cheese before attacking the pride of the Swedish cuisine.

I love Swede Christmas stuff. Not many of the old guys left. Lake Wobegon has nothing us.

We're having turkey for Christmas, most Finns have a ham size of a huge turkey. Grin And liver-, carrot-, beetroot- and swede casseroles, macaroni & cheese, rosolli (cold salad made of boiled potatoes, carrots, beetroot and salt cucumber), salmon, some other kind of fish, potatoes, green salad and tomato-onion salad. Smiley

Some Finns do like lutefisk (or lipeä kala as we call it) and it's traditional Finnish Christmas cuisine as well. My dad used to like it, so we had few few times when I was a kid, but because mom doesn't like it, we haven't had it for years. I have tried it, years ago, and it didn't taste much anything, really.

You can say that again Charlie!  I have managed to avoid the "special" gastronomic delights so I'm still standing Grin  It is a very fragile line I walk and the game of cat and mouse between Helen and it can be a mental challenge Grin Grin Grin  The trick to staying alive is if she mutters something during the cooking or has a sly grin while serving it and then says she isn't hungry cause a distraction, pitch it out for the neighbors cat and quick pretend you are chewing and say how wonderful tha meal is laugh laugh laugh laugh

So far the score is...Paul 2 Helen 0...cats minus 2 Roll Eyes

Svenn...no offence but I'll pass.  Food and head do not belong on the same plate Wink
