Independence Day - Finland turns 90!

December 6, our Independence Day, is an important day for us Finns. This year the celebration is bigger than ever, because it's our 90th Independence Day.

The celebrations begun early in the morning and will continue late at night. Flags are in full mast all around the country. The president, ministers and other members of the parliament gather for special worship.

There will be a military parade later on, which will be helled at different city each year, last year it was right here in Jyväskylä. And there wil be a special Independence Day concert, with particular songs sung each year.

Every Independence Day Finland's history is strongly present. Each year one particular film, Unknown Soldier, is snown. It tells a story about bunch of Finnish soldiers fighting for Finland and it's based on a book which most of the Finns have read and 3 directors have made their version of the story.

7pm begins what most Finns are waiting for - the annual President's Idependence Day Ball, in which politicians, athletes, entertainers, businessmen and of course, veterans, are invited. Each year about 2000 people celebrate at the Ball and pretty much everyone else gathers around TV sets to watch it.

Many Finns light up blue & white candles today to recall all those Finns who lost their lives when while fighting for our Independence. Every year war monuments will be visited and officials wil bring beautiful flowers.

What comes to Timo and me... we're having friends over this year. Timo's two best friends will arrive here this afternoon. I'm going to bake delicious kidney bean- chopped meat pie and make plum tarts(joulutortut), whic are traditional Finnish Christmas delights.

You're welcome, Tony. Smiley

And I forgot to add: at noon begins poor people's Independence Day celebrations; that's when Heikki Hursti & volunteers will hand out lots of pea soup and sandwiches to the less unfortunate in this country. 3 Finnish artists are performing at the celebrations as well.

Finnish students will have their celebration march, another old tradition, which takes place at Helsinki City Centre (I took part on the similar march back in 1999, but right after graduation in May).

The celebrations actually begun last night, when huge fireworks light up the Helsinki's sky. Smiley

Enjoy your time of freedom and rememberance for those who paid for it.  It's wonderful to see some one as young as you are, who appreciates their freedom and respects those who earned it.  My hat's off to you, Sanna.  I wish you and yours many years of happiness and freedom to come.  We could use more citizens like you, over here.  Grin

Rosy, they are yummy. Smiley I make 3 kinds of them for Christmas alone: plum (the original), danes (for me) and rasberry (for my cousin, who cannot stand any other berry/fruit). Grin

Thomas, thank you. Smiley
Independence means a lot for me personally. My grandmother's both brothers died while fighting for Finland's Independence and my grandfather lead his home town's soldiers back in 1939-1944 and he was never the same after those wars. He nearly lost his life during one battle and he never forgot it - in fact, both his summer cottage and ours are named after the important places at that battle. That is his way to bring the past to the future.

I am patriotic woman, so this day is important to me. For us Finns, our Independence was won, earned and therefore precious. My grandparents generation believed in "home, religion and Finland", that was the core values for them all. I grew up in a home in which those values are very much alive and respected, so many ways I was brought up in quite the similar manner than my parents were. If I could decide, the young generations would be taught to respect the past and our history even more. Our Independence was not easy to gain nor to keep at times and I hope that there will never come a day when this nation's youth will take it for granted.

For us, freedom means a lot, because it was won, gained. So, each time I hear our national anthem, I cannot sit; I need to stand. I feel proud, honored, moved and humbled. And extremely proud for being a Finn. Smiley

Jackie, this year the celebrations went nicely nationwide. Back at my house, we ate yummy food, watched the President's Ball, then episode of 30 Rock, talked and had a great time.

Here's some pics of the treats we had:
Kidneybean-chopped meat pie

Plum tarts/joulutortut

Wine & potato snacks:
