Smoke free

Quote Quote Modify Modify

Wow, my first day without a cigarette.

I have smoked for nearly forty years. I have always been pretty fit. I have run many half marathons.

But this year I have noticed I cough more, and people have mentioned to me that I am breathing heavy when I do something strenuous. I have tried many times in the past to stop but I don't think I really had the motivation.

This time I really want to. So I got myself a supply of nicotine patches and I'm going for it. At the moment I feel great   Smiley

Michael,   you can do this.  If we can live with this pain we can live with a few nicotine pangs for a little while.

I quit smoking 2 months ago... after many years of destroying my lungs.   The worst part is the first week.
When I would have the urge to smoke (usually when I was bored) I'd go outside and take a power walk around my neighborhood.  By the time I got home the urge was gone, I felt so much better and was good for another few hours.  I have put the money in a jar that I would be spending on cigarettes and after 6 months have gone by...I"M GOING SHOPPING!!!!   Grin

Those of us who have stopped, Michelle, Melissa and others will help you all we can.  Just be strong.  Take deep breaths and pat yourself on the back every night that you've made it through another day.

First few weeks suck Mike but you can get through it. Fight it one day at a time and one urge at a time.
Tomorrow will be 6 weeks and counting for me  thumb

Been 2 3/4 years since I laid the cigs down.  Still would want one occasionally but I just don't do it.  Stand back and observe your body and mind in this thing, incredible what addiction does.

Nice going Michael. I was 34 when I quit....took two tries...and it saved me a fortune as well. One of these days you'll find that you will forget to have that post-eating cigarette. That's when you know you have it beat.

Quit smoking on February 28, 2005 (although Wellbutrin/Zyban made a world of difference in me not killing anybody)after 30 years and haven't looked back.  Had a few times, especially in the first 6 months that I wanted a cigarette.  Very rarely do I want one now.  Like others said, the first 72 hours are the most difficult physically (It takes 72 hours and there is no physical craving after that point), but the mental hangs on for awhile longer.   For awhile, it's best to avoid situations (if you can) that would trigger that *mental* craving.

Thank you guys. Your support is very much appreciated.

I know from past experience that the problem is mental rather than the physical craving, ie trigger times when you always have a cigarette.

But now I really want this and everytime I get the urge I just think what a disgusting thing it is and it works.

Michael, it's great that you've found a method which helps you with your decition. I recall very well how tough it was for my dad to quit smoking at first, but he did it and I'm sure that you can do it, too. Smiley

Best wishes,
Sanna

a friend of mine also quit recently and she said that the habit of having something in her mouth when she was stress was the harder part for her until she found that eating slowly a twister helped her.

I wish you all the luck in the world and think about yourself smelling like shampoo, soap and cologne not like nicotina.
