Illinois= Nanny State

Helen sent me info. on a new law Illinois has just passed. Now, I cannot own plastic license plate covers. The purpose of these covers is partly aesthetic and also because it deters criminals from stealing your yearly tax sticker. The ignorant idea of the law is because some people let them get cloudy and it make the plate hard to read. Rod Blagojevich (Governor of Illinois) has repeatedly tried to pass stupid redundant laws. His disregard for the opinions of Illinois residents is abhorrent. Now then, the law is stupid because it is REDUNDANT !!! Illinois law ALREADY states that all plates MUST be clearly seen. If you have a filthy plate cover, you deserve a ticket for being too lazy to clean it. Then why should I have to remove mine? I keep mine clean and Police can clearly see mine. When they begin to get old or scratched, I simply replace them. What? I cant be trusted to keep up on my car maintenance? If I were, I would receive a ticket now wouldn't I !?!? What we DON'T NEED is more stupid/redundant laws. What is this!?!?! "preemptive crime-fighting!????" What does Blagojevich think !! Now that I have a sun-damaged and cloudy plate cover, I will use this opportunity to rob a bank!?!?! Typical Blagojevich "nanny state" mentality. Today I had to spend money on something I didn't need...something that did absolutely nothing to make anyones job easier or protect the public. Way to go Rod, one step closer to Socialism. SIGH

Here's our new state law, previously punishable by up to $140.00. Never really mattered much I guess, fineable though, but suddenly not required anymore now. Quote:

I could suppose that y'all wonder why I get all worked up about something that only cost me $12. It's that it is just another in a long line of redundant laws that tell me what I can & cant do....when there is no reason to believe I am somehow making the job of Police harder or damaging someone else's rights. We have another Nazi Fascist law coming on the first of next year. A smoking ban in ALL places of business !!! Thats right, no smoking in MY own business...bar full of obnoxious drunks whose smoking is far less dangerous than their "instant a&&hole, just add alcohol" start a fight mentality, auto shop (full of car exhaust fumes) ...and best of all...tobacco shops. What happened to freedom and the free market place!?!?! If you don't like smoke...DONT COME IN IDIOT !!! They claim it is the Gooberments right to pass laws to "protect public health" It IS when it comes to things like toxic waste dumping or pollution. These things are things that the public CANT avoid by not visiting particular businesses...it is in the whole environment. But, a smoking ban in privately owned business is NOT within their rights !!! Ok, from now on...I DEMAND that everyone stop driving cars. Thats right, I want to protect the public from car exhaust that is a hell of a lot more dangerous than a cigarette. Run a car in a closed garage while you stand in there...what will happen? Stand in a room with a smoker and see what happens...nothing. Of course these are "elective" activities. MY POINT EXACTLY !!!! Cars pollute a hell of a lot more than any smoker could....and you cant avoid it. Of course I am not for such a silly thing. But think about it. If they have the right to ban smoking in MY privately owned business....a place where you don't have to go. Then why not ban cars? But NOOOO, that wouldn't be very popular now would it? Hypocracy at it's worst !!! See what I'm sayin'? Dave

Jonny, I have smoke colored cover because it goes with the blacked-out look of the truck. We also put them over the plate because people steal your tax sticker. You have to pay to get a new one. People steal them so they can appear to be current on their tags when Police drive behind them.

| Yes Jeff...another law in Illinois. Mine are FACTORY installed and perfectly legal to sell a new truck in Illinois this way....but illegal to posses !?!?!? I understand the tinted front window thing a lot easier than the plate thing. Police officers are in danger from criminals who have a gun and use the tint to hide their intentions from Police Officers. I often carry, but am law abiding and am no threat to any Police Officer, but they don't know that. Fortunately our Cops are reasonable about it. I never get pulled over, but am reasonably certain that the average Cop wouldn't bother me about it, since I am not a criminal and don't have drugs in my truck or drink & drive etc. Dave

Dave I'm not a smoker but I agree with you completely. Here are arsebiscuit government have it in law that you can't smoke in your car if its a company vehicle. That means that even if no one else but you ever uses the car and no one but you ever even sits in it you still can't smoke!! WTF?!! Also - get THIS one! If you have workmen coming into your house to do a job YOU can't smoke in your OWN DAMN HOME for 45 minutes before they get there and then the windows need to be open to adequately ventilate the place before their arrival!!! THIS is why you need to fight at the thin end of the wedge - before you end up completely screwed. Bureaucracy at its best - creating jobs for idiots who should be strung up and shot.

You live in a great state, I was pulled over because my plate was loose and wiggeling. In Mass your ass would be pulled over every 30 seconds for a not readable plate.

Burlingame, Ca. You can no longer smoke in an apartment that YOU rent or a condo! Also in sunny California, tinted side windows can get you a ticket if they are deemed too dark. But my 14 year old can get an abortion without my consent or knowlwdge.

I dont have a problem if Cops pull me over because my plate is covered in mud or otherwise not readable. I know how to keep my plate clean...I know that my plate lights must work. No big sacrifice, but the cover law is asinine. Yes Helen..absolutely. I respect other peoples rights NOT to breathe my smoke. If I force my smoke on others, that would be not only bad manners but an infringement on their rights. But as we have seen, no one is forcing anyone. Choice is completely theirs !! The free market place takes care of these things. McDonalds (shit food anyways) went smoke free by their own accord. Citing that people bring their kids in mostly and dont want them to breathe smoke. As it turns out it was a good move on their part. The business they lost was less than the business they gained from parents with kids. Now THATS the free market place in action !!! Didn't need big brother stepping in and saving everyone from themselves. Hell, some cities ban smoking in ones own damn yard !!! Thats right, I can work on my junker car bellowing oil smoke, but can have a cig while cutting my lawn. The pendilum ALWAYS swings too far in this country. What ever happened to reasonable people being a little tollerant? Dave

| Again Jeff, here is where we DON'T need the Gooberment controlling us. An apartment owner can make THEIR apartment houses smoke free if they want. It may be something people really want. If so, they sell more condos. If not, they don't. Forcing owners to do this is a socialist tactic as I see it. Our laws are based on Constitutional law. In a nutshell, if you do something that infringes on another's rights, the Gooberment has the right to pass a law against it. Not an unreasonable concept. Logically, if the Gooberment passes laws that infringe on my rights without showing that the law was written to protect the rights of others from my offense....that is not following Constitutional ideals.

Dont know what the cameras do there Roland, might be different. My son just read that they did a test somewhere and it didnt affect the cameras they had. We don't have those here, so it wasn't part of the new laws emphasis. If it was, I might understand our state's logic better. Dave

Lost of older cars license plates areas were lighted. I want James Bond's Astin Martin with the revolving plates. Here, you can't smoke within 30 feet of most county buildings. That's going to be even more restrictive this year sometime. The latest is that at LSS (Lutheran Social Services Apartments) the workers there can't smoke in the parking lots or around the buildings. This has the neighbors POed because they're getting butts all over their property. LOL. I feel sorry for all the girls working downtown standing outside in blizzards smoking. It's just too complicated and expensive to smoke today. Charlie
