02, got it today

Thanks to the folks on this board, I learned about 02 & how it can help. I saw a different doctor in the same office where I usually go & he was very posative on the use of 02. He ordered me two tanks, one for home & one for work. I've used it twice now & beat back the pain both times. The mask I got has a bag attached to the bottom but is called a partial rebreather. Is this the correct mask? It seems to work for me, but I think I remember someone being very specific about the type of mask that is best.

It has a bag.  That's a good start.

There should be two vents on either side of the mask.  Both should have valves on them which close when you breath in.  If they don't, tape them shut.  Typically they'll send out masks with just one valve.  I usually ask the supplier for a spare mask and take the valve off one of them to use on the other.

BWT: FuckenEh!  That's awesome!

Have you read the info on OUCH-US on how to use the equipment?  They do a much better job of explaining everything.

http://www.ouch-us.org/medications/oxygen/o2links.htm

Take a look at the supplemental guide at the bottom of the page.

I hope it brings you the relief it does me.

Blessed be the O2

O2, you be my wife,
To you I owe my life.
I lie with you, cry without you,
Die should I not have you.
Black bottle, you're so beautiful,
Youthful, slim and touchable,
Seductive, seducive and
Oh! Just so sensual.

Your slinkiness and hardness
And coolness alone,
Render me speechless,
Entirely in your thrall.
Let me breathe of your breath,
New lease on life, not ugly death,
To live again, be a man again,
You're my be-all and end-all.

Those taps and guages
Drive me wild with desire.
I must touch them and stroke them,
Like stoking a fire.
I'm burning and yearning
And hearing you calling,
Just seeing you there
Like lingerie falling.

O2! Please hold me,
Let me be bold with you.
We'll snuggle and cuddle,
Kill this monster a-borning.
It's not just chance meeting,
Or love so fleeting,
Thank you, O2,
I'll respect you in the morning.

Schann, I'm no expert, but I would be careful with a welding tank for 02 you intend to breath. There could be all kinds of contamination in your tank which doesn't impact your welding, but you don't want to ingest that stuff. Do you have health insurance? Mine paid for everything.
I read a piece on the net which stated that breathing chilled air had a very similar effect to breathing 02. Before I got the 02 tanks, I planned on making a unit out of 1.5"dia copper tubing that would fit in a cooler. There would be a tube that was open on one end and stuck out the top of the cooler. Then with pairs of 90 degree elbows I planned to sweat short 10"-12" pieces together to form a long tube that ran back & fourth on top of itself, ending with a tube that again stuck up past the top of the cooler. Put the whole contraption in a cooler, cover it with ice, hook a mask up to one end & breath air thru the copper tubing in ice, & you should get a limitless supply of chiller room air. If my ins. didn't cover the 02 tanks & mask (about $600) I was going to try the above system.

It is the inside of the tank I was talking about, not the 02.

welding tanks are as clean inside as medical tanks, believe it or not. Impurities are as big a deal in the welding world as they are in the medical world.

There was a study published in the April 2002 issue of the Journal of Headache and Pain on the effects of cold air inhalation versus oxygen.  The theory was that the coolness of the oxygen was the effective mechanism in aborting attacks.  In the study, the number of people getting relief from cold air was about the same as those who got relief from oxygen.

Grant it, the study only included eight people, but considering this study combined with the number of people here who say sitting in front of an air conditioner during an attack helps to some degree, a broader study may be warranted.

Cold room air inhalation to abort cluster headaches: an exploratory study

Martha Sue McLeod, Frank Andrasik, Russel C. Packard, Bayard D. Miller

Research has shown that inhalation of pure oxygen is effective in aborting cluster headache. This article advances the hypothesis that cooling is the critical ingredient behind the effectiveness of oxygen inhalation, rather than the oxygen concentration. To test this hypothesis, eight cluster headache participants used a device that delivered cooled room air as a means to abort headache attacks. Additionally, six of the subjects administered pure oxygen so that comparisons could be made to the air-cooling device. The proportion of cases in which subjects attained effective relief from cluster headache pain by use of the air-cooling device was significantly higher than the proportion of cases in which subjects did not attain effective relief from headache pain. There was no significant difference between the proportion of headaches relieved by oxygen and the proportion of headaches relieved by the air-cooling device. This study raises questions about the mechanisms of action of oxygen inhalation for treating cluster headache, and indicates that future clinical investigations into the use of cold room air for treating cluster headache pain are warranted.

All that being said, I am not planning on giving up my O2 tank anytime soon.

Any impurities in welders O2 would cause crappy welds.  The O2 from a welders tank is no different than O2 from a medical tank, period.  The fittings are different, that's all.
