Need BUG help!!!!!
« on: Nov 10th, 2007, 4:39pm »

This is something I've never seen before. I've been invaded by LADYBUGS!! I don't mean a few - I mean swarms.... And it was all of a sudden.

They're taking over the house. Everything I've read on them says they won't hurt anything - they're just looking for a warm place for winter -- it's WARMER outside!!!! We turned on the A/C and turned it down COLD so maybe they'll go OUTSIDE where it's warm...

The research said that once they get inside the vacuum is about the only way to get rid of them, so I've been vacuuming walls and ceilings all day today, but they're still swarming in everytime a door is opened. They're all over my house....

Does anyone know of anything to KILL them... I know they're supposed to be good luck, so I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket cause with this many I'm sure to win!!!

I swear in all my years, I've never seen more than one or two ladybugs at a time and that was far between. They're just not that popular around here. These remind me of a swarm of locus.. (I have seen them before and it's not a pretty sight).

If anyone has any suggestions..... HELP!!!

There was a swarm of Lady bugs that hit the east coast of England a few years ago, but they died off naturaly within a few days because of lack of food.
I dont know what pesticides are available in the US but theres bound to be something you can buy over there.

Those are most likely Asian Lady Beetles. They will bite you in order to taste you, but they aren't interested in eating you. They're looking for a place to over-winter. You'll probably find them on the south side of your house. They are more terra cotta colored than ladybugs, which are redder. And they only have one spot on each side of their carapace.

Don't step on them or smoosh them - they stank, real bad. And they stain things. Only thing you can do is suck 'em up with a vacuum cleaner.

Try this:

"Ladybug, ladybug,
Fly away home,
Your house is on fire,
And your childrens' alone"

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

So basically it's telling me that about all I can do is vacuum them down and hope I get them all. Pesticides don't do much good. UGHHHHH!!!

At least it said they don't BREED in the house. Guess the dogs and cats will get used to them.... and they don't eat clothes or much else. And they say there's a use for every living creature Huh Huh.....

Oh well..... back to my vacuuming......

They're ladybugs.  Serve tea and then have a shoe sale outside on the deck.  Slam door behind them.

LOL, Kevin.
Barb, they're beneficial insects...please don't kill 'em.  Cry

If you must vacuum them, can I talk you into using a new bag, on very low suction, and releasing them in the woods?
They'll lay low until spring when they'll awaken hungry and horny. They'll eat, drink and be merry and populate yet another generation of ravenous garden helpers.

That's part of the reason they swarm at this time of the year (and also why they "taste" humans which, btw HURTS!) - their food source is gone.  Aphids are long gone in their cycle,

Barbara D I feel your pain!!  I knew what this thread was going to be about before I even opened it.

I've been getting invaded by those little buggers for the past 4years or so.  They come into the east side (warm side) of my house.  My bedroom is on the east side of my house.  I keep the vacuum cleaner in my bedroom this time of year.  I think they have a huge nest inside the siding or something.

A few here and there don't bother me, but when there are hundreds on the wall and ceiling beside my bed, I vacuum the little buggers.  It's the only thing you can do.

You betcha Barb.  At least in the West we do.  You get them in nurserys in a packet which is kept in the refrigerator.  They are in a dormancy period at this point and appear dead, until you take them out and keep them at room temperature.  When they wake- up you put them outside in and around the rose bushes and other plants and you get rid of unwanted pests in your garden and they get a free meal.  It's a win-win situation.

What you are talking about is just weird though.  Time to move to California I guess.

Barb-

I have been dealing with the lady bugs for years.  They are my scurge and almost worse than clusterflies.  I use Hot Shot fogger.  Blow off 2 cans in the attic, 2 in the basment and treat around the outside of your house with raid along the foundation/siding line and around windows.  You want to treat areas where they can get in.  When you light off the foggers, evacuate the house along with pets!!!  Cover (airtight) fishtanks!

The fogger is about the most heavy duty stuff you can get without a applicators licence.  IT WILL KILL ANY INSECTS!  I swear by the stuff.

Good luck.  Be gald you don't have both the lady bugs AND clusterflies! Grin

Do clusterflies get clusterheadaches?  LOL.

Yesterday Caleb got fascinated with the "ladybugs" and decided to "gather" some to take to school. Being the nice Granny I am, I got him a butter tub, we put air holes in the top and he proceeded to gather his bugs.

this worked out well and he got his tub of bugs to take to school. BUT..... he could not leave well enough alone - he decided to put water in the butter tub for them.. (ok, he's only 5) and turned the tub over and spilled them in the carpet -- hope the vacuum got them all.  Not only did we have a mess - we had a squalling kid on our hands too.... (he lost his Bugs!!!).

He left about dark thirty -- Granny took an aspirin and went to bed!!!
