Timely Warning!
« on: Nov 10th, 2007, 1:36pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

With the holidays coming on, this is a good time to remember this dreadful possibility!

This was sent to me via email, and felt I needed to share it:

* * * * * * * *

Dear Drunk Driver,

While you refused to relinquish your keys,
You brought Nick's family to their knees.

While you took the life of someone you barely knew.
Nick gave his life trying to protect you.

While you were thrown in a creek,
Nick had been crushed into a tree.

While you were refusing test like the coward you are,
Nick was lying their not breathing with no future on earth near or far.

While you worried about how hurt you were in your hospital bed,
Nick's parents were being given the devastating news their only son is dead.

While you returned to work at the Times,
Nick's body was being reviewed for any new finds.

While you were feeling sorry for yourself and hoping for a break,
Nick's mother and father were seeing their sweet boy and feeling nothing but ache.

While you were kicked back watching T.V. and eating an evening snack,
Nick was having his family & friends pay their respects when he could only lie there lifeless on his back.

While you were worried about hiring your attorney at best,
Nick was being laid to his final rest.

While your parents can see your face and hold your hand through this only as a start,
Nick's parents can only see his grave marker and hold their memories in their heart.

So when you think....why me?....why was I picked?
Take a moment and think about....why Nick?

IN LOVING MEMORY OF NICHOLAS RYAN SHOCKLEY (09/29/86-10/07/07). We love you sweetheart!

Written by: Lisa Shockley Ahuero (Nick's aunt)
**************************************

That poem is in memory of my nephew, Nicholas Ryan Shockley. Nick was killed October 7, 2007 after he tried helping a friend get home that refused to give up his keys. Nick jumped in the car with a guy to help him get home. Nick was the passenger and had his seat belt on. A short time later Nick lost his life because the guy lost control of the vehicle. He hit several trees and went down an embankment. Nick was killed instantly. He was only 21 years old.

Everyone thinks it will never happen to you, but it just might. Lets stop drinking and driving.

* * * * * * * *

Please don't drink and drive!

I am sorry, let me clear this up right away.  I did NOT know, nor am I related to this poor fellow.

It was just an email that was sent to me, and I felt it had a VERY powerful message.  I am just passing that message and warning on.

In 2005, my brother-in-law Matt's best friend was killed by a drunk driver.  Here is the obit...

Nels Keith Jacobson, 18, town of Elderon, was killed Friday evening, June 10, 2005, from injuries sustained when the automobile he was riding in was hit by a drunken driver.

He was born Jan. 8, 1987, in Shawano, the son of Glenn and Karen (Frederick) Jacobson, town of Elderon.

Nels was a 2005 graduate of Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, where he was an honor student. He also was an Eagle Scout and was an avid hunter and fisherman, skier, wrestler and football player.Nels also was a candidate for the Air Force Officers' Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

In addition to his parents, Glenn and Karen Jacobson, Nels is survived by three brothers, Nathan and Jared Jacobson, Van Nuys, Calif., and Matthew Jacobson, Essex Junction, Vt.; one sister, Leah Jacobson, Aniwa; his grandmother, Evelyn Jacobson; many aunts, uncles and cousins and a very special friend, Wendy Stroik. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eldo and Evelyn Frederick and Carl Jacobson; and an uncle, Kevin Frederick.

Nels' charm and ready wit will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

from his funeral...

Glad you brought this up Chuck (no pun intended, I swear!).  Too many people put there drunken, selfish pride in front of other's lives.

Please everyone, don't drink and drive.  If someone asks for your keys, give it to them.  If they don't, ask someone to drive you home or to stay overnight.

My brother-in-law is sitting in jail awaiting sentencing on his 5th (6th???) drunk driving charge.

I pray to God and all that is Holy that they throw the book at him and put him away for a long, long  time.

I drop friends who drink and drive.

I was knocked down and nearly killed at sixteen by a drunk woman who was so drunk she didn't even know she had hit me.
I was crossing the road at a red light and she should have stopped. She couldn't even see it was a traffic light never mind me!
She ploughed straight on and into the walls of a house opposite. The bitch didn't have a scratch on her.

I am rabidly anti drinking and driving. I would call the police on any one I knew in a heartbeat if they tried to get into the car drunk.

This is one circumstance where I don't care who I offend or who's friendship I would lose. Better no friends than irresponsible and needless deaths.

Its not just alcohol that can affect a persons ability to drive safely, some meds and other drugs do the same thing too.

Please be careful !

That was one hard fast rule we made as soon as our son started driving -- one beer - call us and we'll come get you - drive and you're grounded for life. To this day he still doesn't drive after a beer. It just isn't worth it.

Thanks for that Chuck -- I only hope some people pay attention. Like I said - it's just not worth it.

Years ago, drunk driving was treated with a fine for the most part.

I've been in two cars that my drinking buddy drove off the road when we were in our 20s. It's a wonder no one was hurt or that we were never picked up. It was a trip seeing him drunk on his Honda too.

I know better today.

Thanks Chuck.

I think we all have a story about someone we know or have known that has a drinking and driving tragedy. I have lost a few friends over the years due this horror.

The number of convictions is way up in our area the past two years. This is frighting. They just do not get it. It is not a matter of "getting caught in a RIDE program", It means if you have a drink you do not drive, it is that simple. It is not accepted in todays society.

I drink and like my beer but I do not drive if I am indulging. Angie will come get me or if we have friends over she will offer to drive them home. Nobody leaves my place behind the wheel if they have been drinking.

Yes, I have lost some friends over this but hey, they were not much of a friend if they argued about this with me.

Sorry for the long rant but this has stirred up some painful memories for me. Cry

I'm glad that this thread is here. It's always an important topic. In my family, alcohol was a natural part of life; my parents had a glass of wine on Friday nights, beer after sauna on Saturday. If there was even a slightest chance that they'd need to drive, alcohol was not touched.

I grew up thinking very anti-alcohol; I don't like the taste, don't like to drink. It I've had a glass of something twice during one year, that is a lot.

I have an uncle, who has done jail time because of DUI. I was told that it was a wonder that he didn't crash or kill anyone. He is still an alcoholic, but since then he has not even thought about driving during his bouts.

we went out last night for dinner, and I am always anxious when we are going back home and it is not for my husband driving skills but for all the drunk drivers in the freeway.  Sad
I  wish people who drink get a little sense and resposability and if they want to drink do so  at home or have a designated driver if they are out.

I have lost a grandfather to alcoholism, 2 aunts to a drunk driver, an uncle to driving drunk (luckily he only killed himself)....an aunt who is a quadrapalegic, who got hit by a drunk driver, an uncle who died from liver failure due to drinking, my mother is an alcoholic, my brother FINALLY quit drinking when his wife got pregnant, and I hope he keeps it up...I can't believe he hasn't killed anyone....

I have lost too many people to alcohol related deaths, I never touch the stuff and I hope people heed the warning you have posted here...

Thank you and

God Bless all of those that have been touched by this....

okay, I'm off my soap box now!
