Finland: shooting incident in school!

Oh yes, Finland resembles America more and more. I've been dreading this day to come and here it is; the first school shooting incident in Finland's history. They talk about 7 deaths... Here's what CNN has about it: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/07/school.shooting/index.htm l This is a sad day to everyone involved and their closeones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them today. I wish, hope and pray that this will be the last of its kind... Sanna

I'm very sorry to hear this happened in one of Finlands schools Sanna. I do have to say though, that when bad things happen to other countries, is it always automatic that those countries are resembling America? Sorry, just a bit ruffled about the reference.

Mel, I wrote that because there has been many school shootings in America. And because I have heard often enough how things which happen back in America tend to arrive to Finland, as well. I do not wish pain or suffering to anyone, but I do wish that this would have been one of those things which would have never happened. 10 people are also wounded, one in critical condition. Time will tell now what will happen. Sanna

I do love where I live, even with the bad stuff and I'm sorry something that has happened here, has happened in another country. It's just sometimes I feel like we are blamed for everything bad that happens in the rest of the world, ya know? I'm sure you're not blaming us Sanna for what has happend tho... at least I hope not.

Makes me sick to my stomach every time I read one of these. So much promise and potential just snuffed out. And every one of those sterile sounding "casualties" has a mommy and a daddy whose kid won't come home. It just hurts. All our prayers to those poor families. Mel, personally I don't believe in blaming; that doesn't turn the clock nor erase this event. The shooter had his reasons which the rest of us will probably never quite comprehend, no matter how much we'd try. It's heart-breaking to look at the pictures... Sanna

The latest info: 8 died, 12 are wounded, the shooter himself is in critical condition. The shooter had just turned 18 and was senior in the same school.

Here's a link to BBC's story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7082795.stm MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21669167/ It's sad news indeed... Apparently the shooter had left a sort of warning of what was ahead with his youtube videos. One of our daily papers posted the shooter's legacy, a letter, in which he asks people to consider his behaviour solely as "one man's war" and not to blame his parents, brother or friends. He was very interested in guns, online shooting games, non-confirmist movements, communism and nazis. He was described as "good student who didn't have much friends". Sanna

Sorry Sanna I don't know why it happens here. When I was a kid we wrestled in the schoolyard, someone got a bloody nose and most of the time, the 2 were friends the next day. I didn't grab my Dad's .38 and bring it to school. Back then, there were certain absolutes and rules...lines you just didn't cross. I do know one thing, kids these days are not being taught discipline and respect for others rights. SAD !!! Dave

The kid that did this posted videos to YouTube describing the plan to massacre students on 11/7/7. This was COMPLETLEY avoidable if anybody had listened to him. He was planning it for a long time and nobody cared. He even told people what date he would do it. WTF? Quote:YouTube appeared to have removed 89 videos linked to his account, many of them featuring Nazi imagery, shortly after the incident. Finnish media reported someone posted a message two weeks ago on the Web site, warning of a bloodbath at the school. A video posted earlier Wednesday, by 'Sturmgeist89,' was titled 'Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007.' 'Sturmgeist89' identified himself as Auvinen, and said he chose the name 'Sturmgeist' because it means 'storm spirit' in German. |
| Talk about screaming for attention! I guess he really showed them.

The shooter, Pekka-Eric Auvinen passed away last night to the injuries he got as he shot himself into head. He ideolized the school shootings in America and had had contact with the American kid who got jail time for planning a similar crime. The whole idea was to make a statement against the whole society, not just do a massacre. His plan was to kill as many people as possible. Naturally, today's questions in the papers are "why?" and "how something like this can be prevented?". The answers vary. Today's mood is sad and the flags around the country have been on half mast to mark nationwide mourning. http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/08/school.shooting/index.htm l
