ok computer gurus. I need your help. I play an online Computer game called Everquest. I get art from the internet and make the signatures and avatars, like the one that I have on my post. I dont download things from the internet. And I dont open emails from people I dont know etc. I have the standard pop up blockers... About 4 or so months ago, I started getting popups gallore. And I am not sure why. I dont even have to do anything more then turn on my computer and I get them, they just start pulling up windows. This is extremely bad when I'm playing EQ (Everquest), because it will slow me down really bad or even kick me out of the game. I cant set my security any higher then I have it or it messes with EQ. I have put sites on the restricted list but it does not stop the windows and I get other ones as well. Is there anything any of you can thing of that can help with this. I spend good money to play this and after 6 years putting in time for my character, I am not willing to no longer play. Thanks Tia

It sounds like you have spyware and/or adware on your machine. Assuming you run Windows, download Spybot S&D from the following link: http://www.spybotupdates.biz/files/spybotsd15.exe It's free and relatively easy. Then run it every month or so to keep your machine free of spyware. Ray

If you can't clean up This may help you. Once clean the best thing to stay clean is to not use Microsoft Internet Explorer unless absolutely necessary. Some alternatives are Firefox and Opera. With Firefox at 35% of users and climbing there are few IE only websites around anymore. Paul

Run HiJackThis and send me the log in .txt format (or post it) and I will take a look at it. Mark

Check to see if [allow active content to run in files on my computer] is checked in IE-tools-internet options-advanced-security settings. If it is turn it off and see is that stops the problem. It sounds like an active-X control. Then sweep the computer for adware with spybot. Make sure nothing has been added to your home page line. This line can load many pages at once. Rolo.

Thanks guys I'll do this when I get home. It is extremely annoying and I've only wanted to throw my computer out the window a couple of times. Last night was one, so I figured I'd better ask.

Tianna, You have a difficult problem to solve. The problem is your computer is infested, not just infected. Once you have been infected, the chances of removing it are about zero. This doesn't mean giving up the game though. You can backup your EQ stuff, reinstall the OS and start over. It is a LOT of work, but unfortunately, it's the only way to get all of the nasties out. Once your system has been compromised, it is more than likely that over 100 different nasty pieces of software are always running. This makes performance suck because, even though you can't see it directly, the system is doing a lot of stuff behind the scenes. Capturing keystrokes, providing a remote control back door, redirecting your web browsing, sending spam fro your machine, attacking other computers, etc. Believe it or not, all of that is probably happening right now. If I was at your house, I could plug in a sniffer on your network and tell you how many remote systems your PC is talking to without your permission. As it is, you should just bite the bullit and have your systems OS re-installed. After that, the challenge is to stay clean. I think virus protection and things like Norton Security are even worse than the problem. The best way to stay uninfected is to have a perimeter security device (small soho firewall) and stay away from web sites that are 'questionable'. Not that you would, but if you did go to a 'free porn' site for example, all of those nasty things would get immediately installed again on your system (even if you use Firefox). Stay away from crap sites. Don't ever click links in an email. Seriously, if a link looks interesting to you, type it in yourself, don't just click anything in an email unless you are 1000% sure it came from a trusted source and isn't a crap site. It's important to remember, you DO NOT have to 'download' something to get infected. There are plenty of 0-day attacks that only require you to surf to a link in order for it to be 'Game Over' for you. Stay away from downloading any software that is required to view a video. If you can't view it without downloading some random Codec, STAY AWAY. Sorry you're in a mess. Do the HijackThis things and send the results to Mark. He might be able to see some things. If he does spot even one problem, the odds are 99% or better that you simply need to rebuild. Sorry. -Fu

So now I have it installed. Gonna give it a try. Fubar. I have talked about this with my husband. We dont have an op disk. But if none of this works then I think we are going to have to talk to HP and get a disk form them and do just that.

OK ran spybot. as long as the IE was open no pop ups came up. Good Sign. Well I got home and opened the IE to pull up firefox and got it down loaded. I Asked my husband if I needed to uninstall Internet explorer. Well he got on my computer and was looking in folders to see if there was something downloaded that was not needed or wanted and found the rocovery folder. He ran the I guess soft recovery. It poped up saying that it would restore the files but not touch anything that we had installed on it sice we bought it. It restarted and we got the tutorial that we got when we bought it. And at the end it said "Please wait" we will take you to the desk top. And it froze there for an hour. Shaun hard booted the computer adn it would only go back to the "Please wait" Screen. So he hit the full restore. I dont have the pop up issues. I installed Fire fox and am using that. But I lost every picture that I had on my computer for the past 8 years. Is there any way to get those back or are they just gone. crossing my fingers but not holding my breathe, Tia

In all probability, they are still there. Don't worry too much. Yo'll find them. You want to use Windows Explorerer to find them. One typical place is under Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Pictures, you might have accidently created a new username, so look under the old username. Unless you told it to overwrite everything, they are still there
