What have you read lately?

I'm on a book hunt, I've been re reading a few favourites lately so I thought I'd list them and ask for more suggestions from you lot. I've got some excellent books this way before! Twelve Bar Blues - Patrick Neate I love this book. I love the richness of the language and the way it pervades you until you feel like you are there, fans turning on the ceilings and as humid as hell - you can't fail to fall under its spell. The Whaleboat House - Mark Mills. Start reading this and I challenge you to stop. Compelling murder mystery in a period setting. Somehow it reminds me of the Great Gatsby but its nothing like it. I think its the sense of longing for another time. The American Boy - Andrew Taylor I love this book which is a story based on a fictional account of Edgar Allen Poes childhood.. or what might have been. I really enjoyed it. The Sixth Lamentation - William Brodrick This is just a real gripper. WW2, the SS, monks, the holocaust, motor neurone disease - all loose threads bound inextricably together - sort of like my lack of ability to put it down! Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell A collection of stories that stick in your mind long after you've put the book back on the shelf. They are all linked tenuously and I loved how seemingly unimportant events now could make so much difference to someone elses future - or the past played in the present. Certainly left a few clouds flitting across my mind. The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Luis Zafon You just can't help falling right into this book and not wanting to let the characters go.. The Athenian Murders - Jose Carlos Somoza Quite probably one of the most incredible twists I have ever read. Wicked - Gregory MacQuire The story of the witches of Oz before Dorothy - not what I expected but very enjoyable. A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian - Marina Lewycka This book has everything, incredibly funny, a little sad, a rite of passage and I'll read it and re read it until it falls to bits.. and then I'll buy it again. So what can you recommend for me?!

Helen, I've actually read that last book on your list, Finnish edition, though. My Life So Far - Jane Fonda If you're into memoirs, you'll enjoy this one, I sure did. In my case, it turned out to be a journey into my own life as well, which was unusual discovery, since it's non-fiction book about Jane Fonda's life, written by herself. Power of Intention - Wayne W. Dyer If you like self-help books, this one is one of the best I've read (and I've read plenty!). God on a Harley - Joan Harris A brilliant, short book about being lost and finding yourself and the joy for life again. I've read it about thousand times and each time I love it! I would also recommend Married to China - Aira Väisänen but that book - written by my aunt - is only available in Finnish... Sanna

On a more serious note, if you're at all into fantasy, then The Talisman by peter Straub and Stephen King is a must.

Currently I am reading - The Elenium : The Diamond Throne, the Ruby Knight, and the Sapphire Rose by David Eddings. I so loved his books, The Belgariad, The Malloreon, and Dreamers Series. I am not really drawn to the type of books that you ahve listed there, Helen. I am more into Fantasy and some Sci-Fi. Elves, Dragons, Magic, anything that takes place outside this plane of reality. Love the Martian Chronicals, thomas. I have not read it since Jr High. Might have to grab it again though. Recently I have read by Mercedes Lackey & friends The Elvenbane (The Halfblood Chronicles) Elvenblood Elvenborn ****************** The Outstretched Shadow (Obsidian Trilogy) To Light A Candle When Darkness Falls The Phoenix Unchained : Book One of the Enduring Flame (this is a new trilogy that is the continuation of the Obsidian Trilogy, just came out on paperback and picked it up but hve not read it yet. ******************** Joust (Dragon Jousters) Alta Sanctuary Aerie Have recently re-read the Dragonlance Chronicles, Dragonlance Legends, Dragonlance : War of Souls, Dark Disciple (if the 3rd book ever comes out), the Lost Chronicles (which are new), there are so many different books and writters in this. I pretty much stay with Weis and Hickmen unless there is a certain story line that I want to delve into more deeply. Also read the Pern Novels by Anne McCaffery, Anne Rice Vampires and Mayfare Witches books. I am one of those people that have atleast 2 books going at once nad as soon as I am done with a book, I have a new one started in less then 20 mins. Tia

Actually I forgot about another trilogy, that I bought and read so that as my daughter read them we could talk about them. My 10 yr old loves them and they where not simple so that I enjoyed them as well. Dragonspell DragonQuest Dragonknight By Donita K. Paul She is a retired school teacher. She really creates some worderful characters and a world that is full of wonder, magik, adventure and just fun. In looking these up, I see that she came out with a 4th book as well. So I'll have to pick that up (DragonFire). My daughter also enjoys the Deltora books, if someone is lookig for a set of books that are great for kids. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=deltora& z=y I got her the first 7 (Deltora Quest) when she was 7. I will buy her more of the books for Christmas this year. I am about to start to read them to my son. For our nightly 30 mins of reading before bed. I figure these are some great books that will end up getting handed down.

I'm working my way back through R.A. Salvatore's series about Drizzt Do'Urden and his adventures. Prior to that, I think I finished the last book in the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey (this series is not for the faint of heart, nor is it appropriate for *young* readers. Need to check out my library~we have well over 700 hardbacks (probably closer to a 1000), mostly fantasy with books on WW II and the Holocaust coming in at a distant second. If you like Merlin, read the series by T.A. Barron. I know you like books on the Holocaust. I've read all of the following and can recommend them. Justice At Dachau by Joshua M. Greene Survival in Auschqitz by Primo Levi Comandant of Auschwitz by Rudolf Hoess Doctors from Hell by Vivien Spitz Auschwitz, A new history by Laurence Rees The Black Hole of Auschwitz by Primo Levi Neighbors by Jan T. Gross The Twentieth Train by Marion Schrieber The Dentist of Auschwitz by Benjamin Jacobs The Avengers, A Jewish War Story, by Rich Cohen Sol's Story, A Triumph of the Human Spirit, by Richard Chardkoff (this book is written by one of my daughter's professors and the person in the book, lives in this area now).

| Dang...thems some purdy big tires. Helen, if you watched "Green Acres" you would have noticed that Oliver Douglass' tractor was a very old Massey Furgesson. Interestingly enough, Mr. Ziffel, who was much less wealthy than Mr. Douglass, had a better tractor. How could this be? Was Fred Ziffel was growing more than just corn in his field? Or was there another reason? If you can answer this fascinating brain twister, you will win a "Box car Willie" album anthology as well as be appointed "Possum Queen"
