My how times have changed

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907

He was a great man Charlie...I agree. You notice he says: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin." Still the same today, except now the word "assimilate" is used against this ideal as somehow "racist" I submit that it is those who scream racism who are the racists. He goes on to say: "There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." THATS what it means to be an American....UNITED !!!! Too bad ideals like this are under attack. TR was a great and wise man. Cheers, Dave

Really...what happened to this way of CORRECT thinking????? The way the thinking and behavior is today...is , to me, as if you have a houseguest, and when they walk through YOUR door....they TAKE OVER...run your house, look into your checkbook, know alll of your passwords... Why do WE have to learn other languages to accomadate others?? And some REFUSE to speak English...completely ON PURPOSE....How I wish this was the creed of the times....Like the classic saying "If you can't speak THE language...GET OUT OF THE COUNTRY"

Teddy was pretty tall in the saddle. He spoke at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 2, 1918. "I don't ask for any man that he shall, because of his race, be given any privilege. All I ask is that in his ordinary civil and political rights, in his right to work, to enjoy life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that as regards these rights he be given the treatment that we would give him if he was an equally good man of another color." He passed away two months later. He was even bullet-proof. Oct. 14, 1912 Roosevelt entered a waiting limousine. (John Flammang) Schrank drew a .38-caliber revolver from his coat, aiming at Roosevelts's head. Schrank squeezed the trigger. Roosevelt's secretary, Albert H. Marti, noticed the flash of metal and grabbed Schrank about the neck, deflecting the shot into TR's chest. The bullet tore through the fifty-page speech Roosevelt had nestled inside his jacket pocket, and through the metal spectacle case TR also kept jammed there. The slug ripped three inches into TR--just short of vital organs. Roosevelt, being TR, didn't even realize he was hit until a bodyguard notice the bullet hole in his jacket. The Rough Rider reached inside and felt warm, fresh blood. At the Colliseum, he told the crowd: "I'm going to ask you to be very quiet. And please excuse me from making you a very long speech. I'll do the best I can, but you see, there's a bullet in my body. But it's nothing. I'm not hurt badly." He unbuttoned his coat and vest, displaying to the crowd his blood-soaked white shirt. For over an hour he spoke. Only then did he consent to enter a hospital. from "1920, The Year of Six Presidents"

This is the dumbest fucking laws I have ever heard. According to www.dumblaws.com these things are illegal in Illinois: You may be arrested for vagrancy if you do not have at least one dollar bill on your person. You must contact the police before entering the city in an automobile. and my fave of the drek: The English language is not to be spoken in Illinois!

You have to use a little context but still, I like my Grandfather's system of assimilation. He came here from Sweden when he was 11, learned the language, lost his accent and wouldn't allow the family members to speak Swedish other than amongst themselves. They had to learn English. They did. Charlie

Back when TR was around, it wasn't "wrong" to speak your mind. You didn't have to be "PC" all the time. Just say what you mean, and stand by it. Now everyone's afraid to say anything that might upset ANYbody else, so nothing gets done. Damn I wish things could go back to the way they were!! Nice link Jonny! | Yes, there is now a culture of low expectations that exists and a virtual tourniquet applied to the assimilation process. The result will not be multicultural paradise but balkanized hodge podge of tribes. My skeptynical input for today. Scott

100 years ago Teddy was right -- today he's still right -- looks like some of these politicians would study a little history doesn't it??? Ya know -- my ANCESTORS came from Ireland and BECAME AMERICANS. They were never Irish-Americans - they were AMERICANS. I'm an AMERICAN not an Irish-American - just a plain old AMERICAN who's ANCESTORS happened to come from Ireland (a long time ago). I've had the "priviledge" of visiting and sometimes living in a lot of foreign countries (my husband worked overseas most of our 45 years together) and I've yet to see them "change" their rules to suit "guest workers" in their countries. Work visas were "issued" BEFORE entering the country with stipulations and time limits (which were followed or else). We followed THEIR customs and RULES. Sometimes we found someone who spoke English (English is a second language in a lot of countries), but otherwise we spoke in sign language or "learned" enough of their language to get by (depending on how long we were going to be there). What I'm getting at is they didn't let us forget we were a "guest" in their country and that we were "expected" to go by their customs and rules. We understood that also and did. I just don't understand the politicians and bleeding hearts who think we "owe" anything to these "undocumented" workers who cross our borders illegally and then want us to change our customs to suit what they had in thier countries (if they want their customs -- go back where they came from -- not a bad idea anyhow). If they want to work in our country - get a work visa and come here legally - follow OUR rules, or get out! That's what we do in THEIR country! Teddy was right then -- he's still right.... Maybe his speech should be posted in the Halls of Congress - Hugs BD

Former President Theodore Roosevelt insisted to an Irish Catholic audience in 1915 that , "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. ... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. ... There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else."

Thanks for the link! Oklahoma is no longer "O.K." for illegal aliens, Terrill observes. "When you put everything together in context," he contends, "the bottom line is illegal aliens will not come here if there are no jobs waiting for them, they will not stay here if there is no government subsidy, and they certainly won't stay here if they know that if they ever encounter our state and local law enforcement officers, they will be physically detained until they're deported. And that's exactly what House Bill 1804 does." http://www.onenewsnow.com/2007/05/oklahoma_no_longer_ok_for_ille.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Who says Oklahomans aren't smart? *Yes, I was born & raised in Oklahoma & damn proud of it.
