CH + a Migraine = One hell of a night.

I had a massive CH Sunday night. No it wasn’t because the Rockies lost. I think I was having a migraine and a CH. I wasn’t dizzy, but felt like I was on a boat. Was really sick, had nausea worse of all and did throw up. I had the O2, Phenergran and Imitrex, but they took FOREVER to kick in. Has anyone had one of these? My doc is real worried. Should he be? They told me next time, to call 911. They have said this in the past. I have had bad ones in the past, but this has to be the worst. I have the demon for over three and a half years now. I just am not sure if the doc is right to be worried.

If your doc is worried, you should be worried!

Phil, I second Jonny on that, if it seems it is going out of control, let someone else help you, that is whay 911 is for, for emergencies. Pain free wishes for you ... Rosy.

Lisa had a similar Monday morning. She got up ,ate breakfast and was getting ready for school. All of a sudden she felt queezy, clammy hot and dizzy. I thought maybe she ate something bad or it was the flu. She sat down on the couch and started tugging on her eye (clear CH sign) so she hit the o2. It was probably a Kip 8 or 9 and lasted a bit longer than usual. I thought it was all over but when the CH stopped she clearly had a migaine. She doesn't use triptans so she took a few doses through the day of excedrin migraine and was in bed all morning. It really didn't do alot. The whole day was wiped out. I made the mistake the night before of saying she doesn't get migraines anymore. Never say never!!! This isn't the first time that happened and her nuerologist wasn't concerned, he said it happens like that sometimes when you have both conditions. Everyone is different though. Good luck sorting it out! It's almost as scary to watch as to go through it. Charlotte

Been there. Done that. HATED IT!!!!!!!! I had migraines too. I usually didn't get them when I'm in my CH cycle, but it has happened a couple of times. I agree..... It's HORRIBLE!!! Since my migraines were being caused by one of the meds I was on (Zoloft) and not a "true" migraine, Imitrex didn't touch them. So I just had to suffer for a couple days 'til it went away. Add a CH on top of that, and DAMN!! Anyway.... Glad to hear you finally got some relief. Keep hangin' in there, and go see your doc! It's been my experience that migraines and CH don't mix! Might be something a little "off" that's causing your migraines. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted! Adam

Yup...just came out of that this morning. It lasted from Sun. evening until 9am today. This is the sixth episode over the past four months. Definalty, you have to work with your dr. on this. I hope you find a solution.

I understand... I've had a chronic migraine for 6.5 years now, and for me, the clusters make the migraine worse and vice versa. When I get a bad CH hit, then the constant migraine ramps up, so that when the CH hit ends, I really don't get a ton of relief from bad pain because the migraine stays bad on its own, and then I feel like crap for much of the day. It's a vicious cycle for me... This morning though, I got a bad attack, and when it went away, the migraine didn't get worse for the first time in awhile. That was nice!! Ask your doc why he is worried! That's what I would do. Then maybe it'll help you understand what to look for and what exactly he is worried about. My neuro doesn't worry about my migraine/CH combo, but then I've had this combo going on since fall of 2003. PF wishes, Carrie

I thought that migrains and CHs don't go together, but since I had Ch I have also had migrains off and on, and they suspected migrains as well as CH in the begining. (New doc now though) Glad I can come here and not be so damn alone. A good friend asked me to drive her to work Monday evening, the attack hit Sunday late evening. I felt like crap all day monday and canceled. She thinks I just didn't want to do it. She is mad. But lo and behold I am in a cycle. Have had one every night, and a migraine during the day. Been to the doctor today. All seems normal, gotta wait the demon out. And if your friends don't understand, THEY AINT NO FRIEND!

CH + migraine sucks... I've had chronic migraines since before I started kindergarten, and the CH started when I was 17. At 23, the CH became chronic and has been that way for the last 19 years. I tried the clusterbuster treatment and went completely PF for almost 6 months, no migraine, no CH. Then, it came back with a vengeance. I struggle to remember what PF days were like. Someday, I will grow out of this nightmare. It seems that old age is my only hope for long-term relief. My neuro says that my only options are to a) deal with it or b) have surgery on the trigeminal nerve (rhizotomy). I'm resolved to just accept the pain until it leaves me alone. I have O2, imitrex, migranol, fiorinal, whatever I want, but the best option always seems to be 'ride it out' without chemical assistance. Zen. You are not alone. One thing I have learned for sure... your mind is your best friend. It really is possible to 'turn off' sensory input when you must. Think of it like this... when people are in horrible accidents, their body does a lot of things to protect them... it's called 'shock', but basically the brain says 'NO!' to input like intense pain. You can learn to use this basic instinct to your advantage. I used to quietly laugh to myself every time I see Charlie post that bit about circulatory control through concentration alone, but I'm now convinced there is much more to meditation and using your mind to control the perception of pain. For example, I walk on Pismo Beach for about 5 miles each day. Some days it is really cold, but I don't bundle up, I simple 'turn off' the perception of cold. When i do that, I actually feel a wave a warmth when a gust kicks up. Crazy? No, it's about just changing the perception and really believing it. And, it can be taught! I convinced my son (17) that this works, and now he tells me often about how he uses his mind to overcome pain and cold. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing that has kept me sane, if that's what I is. -Shawn

Wow I feel a certain comradery with you Migraine sufferers... though not allowed much to talk about that condition I too am a chronic Migraine sufferer since I was 17.5 years old. I remember growing up and watching headache comercials on tv saying... That is a horrible thing to go through. I could never imagine having a pain that felt like a hammer banging someone on the head... I had never felt that kind of pain ... When I became pregnant with Scott and a few months into the pregnancy I got my first Migraine headache. I will never forget it. When I had Scott they had to give me a spinal and got me up wayyyyyyyyyy too soon... Hence... Spinal headaches which made my Migraine seem tame. There are days that go into days when my Migraine lasts and rips my eye right out of the socket... I have had that pain for 3 days at a time. I can sometimes abort them... sometimes not. The other point I wanted to talk about was I agree with you Shawn about the meditation thing and how powerful the mind can be. I have Raynauds syndrome. It comes when the weather starts to get cold. My circulation does not go to my toes once I get a chill and for some strange reason my toes actually turn white... Its a painful condition that comes sometimes in airconditioning too... UGG boots are my friends.... anyway I have taught myself this technique much like the one you use on the beach too... I love the ocean and here in New England the waters can be very cold. I got to the point that I could not even go into the water or put my feet in the water. I decided I was not going to have that problem at the beach and began to think warm and push that idea into my feet. Soon after I mastered this technique I didnt lose the feeling in my feet at the ocean. I just told my body warm and it wanted it so much that it agreed... <3Ree

Every now and then I get a migraine, or at least I think its a migraine. I have had ony 8 to 10 of them. It feels like my brain is sloshing around in my head every time I move it. They last for hours. They are always accompanied by multiple ch hits, every couple of hours or so. The only way I can get rid of them is to go to sleep, but we all know what that brings on. They suck.
